Hi, I ran into issues setting up the USB drivers in Windows 98 for the below rig.
Socket A ga-7vtxe+ (chipset VIA KT266A), Athlon XP 1700+, 256mb of ram.

Win98 runs perfectly fine, until I install the nusb drivers, tried with both 33e and 36e.
I must mention that I follow the installation procedure and have successfully installed this driver on other configuration.
Also that the current configuration detects a usb flash drive when plugged in but of course cannot find a driver. So I assume that the USB ports work properly.

The outcome: Upon reboot (after installing nusb), the os detect the PCI to USB bus as a new hardware and tries to install the driver from Win98CD .
This is when the following error comes up.

Msgsrv32
This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down.
MSGSRV32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL.EXE at 0002:00002b8e

From here I can only shutdown and disable the USB port in bios to properly boot in OS.
I flashed the latest bios from rev F3 to rev F6a but it didn't help in that specific issue.
USB port cannot be enabled unless I start the installation of Win98 from scratch.

My first question when looking at the error is whether it is possible to restore the files altered by nusb so that I can resume and not install the OS again?
Secondly is whether there is a solution to get nusb driver to work properly? otherwise I'll carry on without using usb flash drive.

Thanks

Is it 98 or 98se ? The NUSB is for 98se, I dont think it works on regualar 98 I could be wrong.

Try the NUSB 2.2 Drivers from this page. You could of corrupted the install though and may have to reinstall windows before you try. The newer NUSB drivers, go to0 far imo they start adding files from XP and update the explorer.exe with a bugged version.

Dont run any unofficial service packs

It is 98se, I will try the NUSB 2.2. How about 2.2.1e listed in the thread you linked?
Thanks for the link which contains some good stuff for a clean install.

There is no .exe so 2.2e is a manual install? meaning that I need to indicate the folder when win98 prompts for driver after detecting the new device?

It manual it says what to do in the readme file.
Native USB (NUSB) 2.2.1 update

Only .INF file!!!

Use only after installation of the NUSB 2.2 !
For installation copy the file USBSTOR.INF in the hidden
catalogue folder WINDOWS\INF\ and replace the old file.

I mean the NUSB 2.2 (not the update) does not have an executable so that it is likely needed to point out the folder during hardware detection.

Tried the 2.2 driver after installing the OS, but it did not work.
The motherboard and the driver do not seem to be compatible and I'll leave it at that. There are other ways to quickly transfer files.
Thanks again for your help!
