I haven't tried overclocking it. It's running the stock 90MHz. I don't think I'd risk overclocking it, at least not until it gets some board work done on it to re-flow fresh solder and replace aging components. It would be an expensive mistake otherwise 🤣

Hi. A few months ago I had the urge to assemble a retro gaming PC for Windows 9x/DOS. I wanted to build a fast, uncompromising and trouble-free system in which everything would run at full speed. I also didn't want to spend any big money on it, so I was bidding on components worth a maximum of $10 at auctions. I admit that I bought way too much anyway because I spent about $ 500 on several different boards, cases, processors, rams, disks, graphics cards, sound cards and other parts. I started with building systems based on Pentium 2.. 3.. 4.., but they did not meet my expectations in terms of speed. Then I tried the AM2 platform with Athlons and Phenoms. Phenoms turned out to be surprisingly fast but I ended up with Socket 775 and Core 2 Duo which turned out to be the fastest.

My current configuration:

First time poster but long time lurker. Just want to share my Retro PC with you all.

It's a K6-2 450 on a Jetway J-542B. It has an A:\3.5' 1.44MB Floppy. B:\5.25" 1.2MB Floppy. C:\Seagate 80GB drive with the 32GB limiter jumper on it. D:\USB sticks E:\DVD Multi (cause the OG CD-RW is starting to fail) F:\DVD-ROM.

A 400w P4 compatible PSU by Mercury. 128MB of RAM. A Voodoo3 3000 16MB AGP graphics card and a Creative Labs AWE64

The power switch is missing it's guts so I've connected the reset switch from the case to the power switch header instead. It's now rocking a Daewoo 15" CRT monitor I got from an Aunt's clearout.

Also..I have an ABIT AB-BH6 1.02 Slot 1 motherboard coming which i plan to do an ATX tower build with. With a PIII-450

In this case once i've cleaned it up

nothing spectacular. But should let the Voodoo3 3000 sing a bit better in quake. I'll put the S3 Trio 3D/2x back in the K6-2 and get a more suitable HDD for it

Hi everyone, I was quite lucky to get the pictured PC for free. I wasn't planning on creating a physical build but the opportunity arose and it's been quite a satisfying project. I've replaced the PSU with a modern unit + given it a deep clean and re-done thermal paste etc. I added a GPU and sound card + SSD.

Also some quality of life additions like an optical mouse and modern Creative Pebble speakers which provide excellent sound and don't ruin the asthetic too much. Keyboard is a Cherry MX 3000M. Monitor is also Fujitsu Siemens but of course more modern.

I was a huge LucasArts fan back in the day and played everything apart from The Dig. I only ever bought games on discount or from the budget re-release labels. So for some reason I never played it before. It was so nice to finally play it through on original hardware. A very cinematic atmosphere with great sound design and music.

How do you like that Logitech Wingman Pro with X-Wing and other similar games?

I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro as shown below. While it's not period correct with my Retro Rig, it's an awesome stick for playing the various X-Wing and Tie Fighter games. Currently using it with X-Wing Alliance and having a blast! Pun intended! 😉

A new Retro Rig I'm still working on, still some parts on the way. I want to get a PCI SATA RAID Controller in order to get a second WD Raptor Drive and running those in RAID0. The Power Supply is also temporary as I have an Enermax Liberty PSU on the way to replace it (Mainly for aesthetic reasons).

This build goes up against the Northwood 3.2GHz P4 + 9800 Pro 256MB rig as being the two most powerful rigs at the time before Intel moved to the 3.4GHz P4 then Prescott and AMD moved to the Athlon64. This was a moment in my life that I remember fondly and wanted to re-create it.
