Hi guys,
I got me a YE-Data YD-308c 5.25" floppy drive. It's in great condition, except its upper head (Head 1) doesn't want to read at all. Head 0 reads very well.
I fully disassembled the drive and its boards and couldn't find anything wrong with visual inspection. No bulging caps, no browning, no rust.
The head assembly is all good and there are no signs of abuse or anything out of place. I tested the ribbon cable that goes between the head and the PCB, and it is continuous (no breaks).
I'm a bit lost as to what to investigate further. Do those magnetic heads simply "fail"?
I put back everything in place, and tried to adjust the upper head in various directions, but it was never able to pick up any data.
My tools are a multimeter and IMGDisk. I don't have an osciloscope to probe the head's lines.
Any ideas of what could have gone wrong? What to investigate further?
