This would be the second time I watched one of phils computer labs videos and the hardware in question presented itself to me via ebay.

It's certainly a good card, and runs very well. A3d 1 works alright and it's nice to see quake 3 use it.

One thing that is very odd. Is the s/pdif input for the cd drive.
When I had the sb live installed it worked but the santa cruz it doesn't.

Of course the slider is unmuted in the control panel, and under advanced, cd digital is toggled on.

But no sound. Extensive searching revealed nothing, except someone else having the same issue.

I don't believe it's dead, just something isn't right with compatibility or it needs triggering in another way.

Installed in win98se using VxD drivers.

Other than that, it's really good and refreshing from the usual creative cards. Similar cards to it include the hercules fortissimo range (except fortissimo 4), hercules digifire and hercules gametheatre xp.

Uses crystal chipset. Anyone else had this or know of why that port doesn't work?

S/PDIF from CD works fine with my Santa Cruz. Maybe the spdif output from your cdrom is incompatible with the card (it expects 5V TTL voltage level AFAIK). Try a different cdrom drive.

Aha! That's the trick.

Thankyou for that! I will definitely try another
