yes, you were probably lucky, I tried the IDE BIOS and still no chance. I've since acquired a VIA and another promise that is SATA 300 and they both also work.

Here is a picture of the PSU I use, it's actually not bad at the 5V rail

I use it in Abit NF7-S V2.0 and it is indeed good however it’s also very very picky about overclocking even if PCI is locked at 33mhz and the system passes memtest and all that.
The transfer speeds would go all over the place and data corruption cost me 2 reinstalls.
