So I need a bunch of KM416C254BJ EDO chips for a project. But KM416C254DJ is far more plentiful and much cheaper.

They're both 256K x 16 5V SOJ40 EDO DRAMs.

There must be some difference between the B and D variants, right? Could it just be revisional?

I can't even find the datasheet for the B variant, the datasheet sites just forward to the D variant datasheet. But I don't trust that.

If anyone happens to know, I'd love to hear it. I attached the D variant datasheet. I've read through it a few times and haven't seen where it spells out the part number meanings.

EDIT: After extensive testing and reading of datasheets found by Vogons members I can confidently say the D and B variants are compatible.

Ok did a quick search did not find the KM416C254BJ datasheet but did find a site that sells chips say UMC (NPNx) NN514265A is a replacement. Here: https://www.findchips.com/compare/KM416C254BJ … --NN514265LJ-60
Appears to read similar in timing and pinout as the samsung DJ series. If that true and the NN514265A is a replacement then the DJ should be usable as a BJ replacement.
As long as the layout, timings and pinout match then it should work.
Maybe mkarcher or other member can look it the datasheets more closely..
Sorry do not have time to try to dig thru wayback machine for old samsung data tonite but will do some digging later....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Interesting idea looking for cross references. Appreciate the help!

So after looking at the D datasheet they appear interchangeable...will study in more detail later.

Awesome! Thanks!

I had no idea about these databooks before you guys posted them. This will help me out a lot in the future.

After examining the datasheets provided by you guys I was confident to give it a go.

I tested in the following PCI video cards:
Cirrus Logic GD5446
S3 Trio64
ATI Mach64 CT

I did extensive high res testing to use most of the framebuffer ram. No crashing and no artifacts or corruption.
I am confident now that the B and D variants of this EDO DRAM are compatible.
