I thought of adding a DVD drive to my laptops and I got 2 HP UJ-840 slim drives made from 2005 and 2006.
I put both of those in a Toshiba Satellite 320CDT and a Compaq Armada 1750 but both of those don't recognize in BIOS the DVD drives.
The old CD drives are recognized easily.

Is there some sort of ATAPI/IDE incompatibility going on?

I might guess there would be incomplete ATAPI support on those old laptops that those new DVD drives use.
