Heya new here
I have a dell dimension 3100c pentium 4 ht 3ghz 2mb cache
It has only 1 sata connector and power connection to 160gb sata drive
And 1 ide/pata connector and molex connected to dvd drive
No floppy drive

Been trying to install win xp 32bit but keep getting stone walled with blue screen of death
It won’t allow me to install to sata.
The system works with ide harddrive with os on it ripped from other computer but leaves me without a dvddrive.

I can’t figure out how to install to the sata drive I have many install versions including the drivers but install won’t pick them up.

According to the manual your chipset doesn't even support AHCI, so it shouldn't really be a driver problem...

The only thing that really comes to my mind is that I do have an Asrock motherboard from give or take those years with broken SATA, wasn't an Intel chipset recalled exactly for that reason? (As well as another one in the sandy bridge era...)

Finally got xp running on this build with the sata harddrive needed to load the sata controllers and piss about with the hdd for the install to finally accept the hdd.

Next challenge is installing win 98 on both computers but boot disks aren’t working on an actual computer but are on PCEM

Struggling with win xp installation I tried setting up dual booting by installing win98 but could only get a barely working OS managed to install win xp on another partition but nothing would work it was literally just win xp I could do nothing with it.
So I wiped all the partitions and tried installing xp again but the installation keeps failing for one reason or another but it will not accept my harddrive no matter which controller I try to use or installation method.
This system originally shipped with xp so how can get the bloody OS back on there working.

You can't dual boot 98SE with XP. You either need a different boot manager (not the windows one) or do a triple boot of 98SE, 2K, XP. Also, what is the error on XP? You could try to install XP on that drive in another PC, then put it inside the dell or write an image of the original install onto the drive.

This isn't true.
As long as you install 98 (or any other OS) first XP's boot manager will work fine. 3rd party managers are more powerful, but I've never needed to use them.

I can think of 2 options.
Unless BIOS has been crippled you should be able to get an IDE cable with connector for 2 drives. Have the HDD as primary for Win98 and set the DVD as slave. Molex splitter's exist if required.
You can then install XP on the Sata drive.

Option 2 is partition the SATA hard drive in fdisk as follows:
Primary partition = (however big you want Win98's drive) set as active. Format this as FAT32
Create Extended partition with all remaining space, then create logical drives, either one big one for XP or create "data drive" for games, files, etc and another for XP.

For example, my typical setup is

c:\ 2GB, Fat32, Win98
d:\ all remaining space, Fat32, Data
e:\ 4GB, NTFS WinXP
Doesn't really matter if its using 1 drive or more this setup allows XP's built in menu, the data drive can be accessed by both OS's and having XP as the final drive drive letters remain the same in all OS's

Install Win98 to c: first then install XP to e: and the menu will set itself up.

Although
before all this You want to make sure you can install each OS successfully on their own
For Win98 you can create the partitions, format the drives, make c:\ bootable and copy win98 install files to the HDD and transplant to the dell and install.
XP should be as simple as putting the CD in and installing.
if it doesn't work report back with errors, and further info

Whilst I’m not generally getting error messages with win98 the install sort of stalls or freezes I’ve used the mem patches too. And trying to load any drivers kills win98 on reboot
And with xp I either get the 7b error or the vxd one. Unable to figure out what sata controller drivers I need to successfully install xp.
At this point I’m just wanting to get xp working as it originally a xp machine I’ve no option in bios to set ide mode.

So I don't really have time today /this weekend to look properly but think this link is interesting.

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversatio … 4ccf8a8de89c479
Looks like if you set the Hard drive mode to Auto it should default to IDE mode, or they mention the AHCI F6 disk driver which can be found here

Progress report I’ve got dual boot sort of running 🤣
Win98 currently only works in safe mode and it won’t recognise my cd/dvd drive or usb.
Xp sp3 professional is fully operational with all drivers no error ( I found a dell specific reinstallation/restore disk in internet archives).
That sorted xp out perfectly
Just need to figure win98 out without breaking it

Attempted to install win98 drivers ended up bricking the os and reinstallation ended up breaking the mbr and lost the working xp partition but regained that with reinstallation of xp
Cannot think of how to get a functioning win98 partition.

Ok I would ignore XP for now as you know how to install it, We'll probably brick the computer a few more times so no point wasting time installing XP each go.
are we installing 98 on the same drive? if so how big is the partition?
How much ram is installed? Win98 doesn't like more then 512MB max without work arounds.

I’ve set a primary partition 35gb fat 32
Extended partition 48gb fat 32
And remainder of 500gb hdd ntfs
And 1gb ram don’t have anything smaller that will fit
I’ve tried using the mempatches as well
System usually hangs on second boot

Hi, I don't know if this'll help in your particular situation, but I planned to add XP to a Packard Bell iMedia S3720, which originally shipped with and has, Windows 7.
The iMedia has the same problem as your Dell, giving various BSOD errors, and failing to install XP properly, aside from any associated driver issues when XP is installed. However, it appears to be a compatibility issue, so going into the Bios, and changing the 'SATA Mode' entry from the default 'ACHI' setting to 'Native IDE' solved the problem.

You might've already tried this, or maybe it's not an option on your Dell's particular Bios, but if it is, this may help. Good luck! 😉

Credit to FistbumpBros on YouTube for the solution.

Cheers BigDave unfortunately I made the mistake of buying old p4 dells not knowing about sata and pci issues(lack of correct type) but my bios doesn’t have the ide mode setting I have two options raid/ sata/pata auto or Raid.
And my power supply only has one sata and one molex waiting for parts to arrive so unable to ribbon off the ide port with cd/dvd rom

I don't see any issue with your hard drive layout
but 1GB RAM is way too big for win98 to work without patching.
Given that you want to dual boot with XP patching makes more sense than reducing RAM.

Patchmem.exe is what I use, even purchased it before it went freeware.

I’ve purchased a pair of 512mb ram I’ll try from there.
Tho I’ve managed to install win 98 with mempatch it keeps breaking when installing drivers for my hardware I lose my usb mouse and keyboard and cd/rom drive and won’t let me install drivers in safe mode.

On a side note does anyone have a recommendation for a windows 98 compatible graphics card either pci 2.3 or pci-e x16 or pci-e x1
System 1 only has pci 2.3
System 2 has combo of all 3. half height ( also the system that’s being discussed here) ideally the system I’d like to use because it takes up less room.
