Am I being paranoid or do others feel with me that we have several AI chat bots in the forum?
I noticed recently the presence of posts that indicate a certain level of dumbness/inaptness from the author. And as their thread develops in, it feels more that they don't listen well or do not follow recommendations properly.. and then there is the weird language sometimes.. all very reminiscent of AI hallucinations.
When I lookup the users, most of them joined very recently.
I don't want to link any specific posts now in fear I might be wrong about them. Do you see such posts? What would be the proper action towards such accounts if they proved to be AI chat bots?

I understand your concern, but I would first ask this question :

How does one conclusively prove that a user is an AI chat bot rather than inept or possibly using a marginal quality translation tool (not everyone in the world speaks/writes English) ?

Voight-Kampff and Turing test jokes aside, I think the only practical approaches one has are to either add suspected users to one's ignore list (at the risk of ignoring an inept or English-challenged user who may yet improve) OR tolerating them.

Thank you.

My concern that this may generate significant workload and potential conundrums for moderators.

I sent one to you in PM. Don't want to charge the guy in public in case I'm mistaken. It's not a clear cut case.. but various indicators summing up to the feeling it's an AI having fun.

Dumbusers have existed since the birth of the internet. Nothing new.

Gotta admit. An AI chat bot just recently helped me perfect a few recipes. I dunno. I'm kinda liking this new, brave artificial world. I mean... as long as the pie is good. Right?

I wanted to make a similar post because of similar observations, but I ended up attributing it to a different generation of people instead of AI. One that doesn't communicate the way the older generations know. That doesn't have the patience to read carefully and understand, doesn't want to do the slightest effort, will ignore anything that looks complicated or irrelevant, that just wants a quick answer of what magic button to press to solve the problem (it has to be only 1). Often it also mistakes a forum for a chat room. Many times it seems disrespectful to people offering their help, only to be completely ignored or receive half answers and maybe a blurry photo that the uploader didn't even spend 5" to take correctly.

This or, most probably, I'm becoming an old fart and started preaching the "back in my days everything was better".

You can't blame folks for taking the easy option when it is offered to them. That is human nature. As long as there are suckers who will continue to hand-hold these people in the name of "accessibility" the demands will continue, and accelerate.

AI posts is a waste of my time both reading and answering. The thread I've been helping in recently just became more and more indicative it's an AI rather than a stupid user. Answering a direct precise question (what did you use as a search query in YouTube?) with a very generic and kinda stupid answer. I'll just bail from that thread.

I don't want to turn this thread to opinions about AI. The same applies to any human trolls as well, who are also not always easy to pick out before you already invest time reading their crap. It's just that with AI it's more annoying because there could be no limit to them.

As far as a end user action nothing except don't reply and possibly report it. You can usually tell an idiotic post is an idiotic post but perhaps those used to more "modern" comminication methods cant. Things can be done manually or automatically by the site but depends on indicators. There are those that act like bots so may want to be careful those don't get blocked but I personally wouldn't lose any sleep if they were. 😉

After the advent of ChatGPT, most people below a certain IQ threshold can't pass the Turing test any more, so how would you ever know?

Anyway rule of thumb if you sus a possibly misbehaving replicant

- Take a suspicious post into gptzero and hive, but don't rely fully on them.
- Check earlier posts for late edits that add links, as a SEO strategy's also involved
- See the gap of post history. Some of the slop comes through on abandoned accounts.
- if soemone posts like a transcribed youtube video, makes bold claims like the Voodoo5 being the fastest card... then.yeah

AI bots will frequently brazenly lie and then pretend they agreed with you all along when you correct them.

Also not very helpful to tell a bot from a real person.

Please elaborate. What makes you think that AI posts are a waste of your time both reading and answering?
