Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyo,
Duke 3D Atomic Edition (I upgraded from the 1.3d version with the Plutonium Pak) has been working fine with my Windows 98 pc in pure DOS. But after I made some changes to my autoexec and config.sys the game stopped working. It only works in Windows now which is not ideal because I use a Creative PCI 128 card and the echo effect only crashes the game in Windows not Dos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank ye all

Any detail you can provide on these changes will help you get help.

I used the full updated text from this earlier thread for my autoexec and config.sys
Re: Memory error in DOS
Look at Gmlb256's post.

Does it perhaps have something to do with the EMM386 line in CONFIG.SYS?

As I gathered from your DOS memory post, you don't have much UMBs, and most of your DOS drivers have to be loaded into memory. QEMM provides much more UMB memory than EMM386 and has two Stealth modes to buy more memory than that. If you don't know where to get it, it should be available at REMOVED. Try it out.

So would I just replace "emm386" in the line with "qemm"? I already have it installed but I haven't been using it.

Try QSETUP to install QEMM in your DOS setup and then OPTIMIZE to free more memory. While you're using QSETUP, try to add "I=B000-B7FF" to QEMM's command line. This won't be done automatically and should buy 32k of UMB RAM.

there is no reason to mess around with emm386 here, duke3d is an extender game and only needs a small amount of conventional memory. the game's help file will tell you as much. unless you are trying some crazy setup here you can just load your drivers normally and run the game.

Okay. You're right. It seems that the OP has enough Conventional RAM for his needs. I just want him to have more RAM. 😀

I'm sorry for this, but I'm an egotist and want to see the fruits of my work. Can you post here your current configs and memory layout, please? I'm glad I was able to help. 😀

Are you sure you ran QSETUP and OPTIMIZE? I see no UMBs. I don't have my Win98SE tower available, so I can't help you much, but I will look for my QEMM download with documentation on my main laptop and, if possible, will come back. 😀

That happened to me also. Apparently, on P4's, Win98 doesn't like DOS UMBs. I had no choice but to sacrifice everything in Windows mode and use a DOS startup floppy for DOS programs.

I mean that I got the same error on my current Win98SE tower when I tried to use QEMM then boot Windows.
