BTW I have found that my AGP RV2200 do very poor FPS in DOS doom (-timedemo demo1), only 13,5 FPS, similar to ISA VGA that can do 16,8 FPS. On the same system PCI S3 Trio64V+ can do 91 FPS and AGP Matrox G200 can do 121 FPS. Is it normal? Is it poor VGA part design or do I need to run some tweak to boost VGA performance? Or bad compatability with GA-5AA MB?

DMA isn't working most probably. You should try r_surfacelookup 0 to see if it goes faster. Does Rendition DMA Test work? You can find it on this site.
[edit] doom, not quake. I seem to have quake on the brain at the moment. My entire post is pointless.

Maybe you have to try RENUTIL.EXE. It's Rendition's DOS tool. See the posts about it here: Re: Rendition Verite Thread

Ok, please could you point me to a download link or what driver package contais renutil.exe? I looked through all 36 pages and found only a few references about it but not the download. As I read it should remap slow VGA to VESA mode. As vquake runs at reasonable speed it seems not be a general bandwidth limitation but affect only VGA mode. I wonder about slow ISA VGA speed too (only 16FPS) on this MB, as VGA framebuffer is only 64KB it should pass some ~100 FPS - 6,4MB/s through slow ISA...

RayeR, you can download RENUTIL from Vogon's drivers page.

I hope it will help you to solve the low framerate problem.

Thanks.
DMATEST.EXE complained "PCI access failed!" "VPDGet found no boards"

RENUTIL.EXE with cmdline options "0 2" set to VGA mode 2 made significant speed up to 114 FPS (close to MGA G200) but the sceen got crippled - it displayed 8 small doom screens beside in one line and such 3 lines from top of screen. Somewhere I read that RENUTIL is not compatible with VGA mode X and Dooms seems to use something called mode Y, as I read, it's 320x200 as mode 13h but with some mode X features. So probably no cure for this issue... (of course in this particular case I can use Zdoom with VESA modes support but for other mode X games...)

If you run this from Windows 95/98:
https://nirvtek.com/downloads/RTest.7z
does it say Bus Master 0x0 or 0x1

The value is the DMA available flag as reported by RRedline.

The Doom issue won't be affected by DMA (my bad), just the VGA/VESA flags as analog_programmer said.

Well, at least you tried this potential workaround. Thanks for your detailed feedback.

All VGA unchained modes are slow on the Verite cards, and there is no way to fix it. Only pure mode 13h can be accelerated.

I did some testing comparing unchained VGA, mode 13h and VESA 320x200 modes in FastDoom. The result is quite clear:

Thanks for FastDoom! I'm building a PC to the specs I had in 1998 - Cyrix P200MX + Rendition Verite 2100. The Verite chip probably forced my gaming habits out of the dos era and into the windows era due to it's awful handling of standard vga modes. At least now when I re-visit Doom on this PC, I'll be able to get decent speed. I'll stick with 13H.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

Excuse me, if I'm missing something here, but what's behind the idea for your Rendition Verite wrapper on a real Rendition Verite hardware?

The app was designed to test the return value from a Rendition BIOS call on original hardware so the wrapper/dosbox could simulate it. Worked out what needed to be returned.

That was just me asking someone with a real Rendition card to test the BIOS. It wasn't needed in the end.

[EDIT] BTW I do have a plan to port dosbox-rendition to dosbox-w98 to see if I can get rid of glitching on some V1000 games when running on a V2000. First I have to finish regular Dosbox-Rendition.

Does anyone know how to run ICR2 on FreeDOS? I'm running off a USB stick on a V2100 with DosV2Fix applied.

I get this error:

C:\DOS\CR>cart
DOS/4GW Professional Protected Mode Run-time
Copyright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994
Copyright (c) 1994-1997
Version 1.0.2-RN1 Build #61
DMA Memory fragmentation:
Memory Check: 575904 LO 63848432 HI 64424336 ALL

RN1 Error: Could not map linear pointer to physical
Diagnosis: Not running in DOS?

For best results, ICR2-RN1 should be run on a Pentium or
better CPU, in DOS exclusive mode, without EMM386 loaded,
and with at least 12 Mb of memory free, preferably 16 Mb.

i get same error with ms-dos 6.2 (and boot (F8 at boot) to command line of win98 too) and v1000 on i5-3450
same ssd in athlon1333 works fine

n2rend.bat (nodma) sometimes work in i5-3450 with ms-dos 6.2 (sometimes it hepls to start rebmoon before or vquake (which doesn't work too - but you can use ctrl-alt-del to quite vquake to dos) ) (but performance is very slow - like 2fps a second when there is a lot on the screen)

btw vquake doesn't work even on athlon1333

Vquake, rebel moon and whiplash work for me. On an i7 2600 with freedos.

I think this is an emm386 related issue. Vquake run at full speed for me.

i don't have emm386 installed
dos4gw games don't require emm386
if you use emm386 for sound blaster emulation just disable it and try game without sound

Didn't know that! I'm not using emm386, but dosbox I think enables all that by default, so I assumed that that was the problem.

I did try it with with the freedos equivalent of emm386 and it didn't work.
