I was thinking I could have an Ati 9550 commit harakiri in order to save a much more valuable card that has memory artifacts (allegedly) (I'll let you guess which card it is).

Both cards use 8 SDRAM DDR TSOPII-66 chips for a grand total of 128mb @128 bit. Same voltage, timings and frequencies (in fact the destination card needs less mhz than the 9550).

Brands do not match however. The donor is Samsung, but the original memories were EtronTech.

Datasheets are very similar AFAICT but I know nothing about electronics. Only brand differs.
"All inputs and outputs are compatible with SSTL_2 interface" the datasheet say.

Would this be possible?

If yes, is it ok to find a donor card with better timings, because why not?

Edit: donor is actually a 9600. Not a big difference I imagine.

Edit2: VDD and VDDQ must match exactly?

Edit3: so this is kinda hard, but I found some memories that have same frequencies, timing, voltages (vdd vddq), packaging (TSOPII66) and amount of chips (8x16mb). will it work?

If one of your cards is working, I wouldn't sacrifice it. Wait until you come across some other card that's completely disposable and then perform the surgery and hope for the best.

It's not easy to do surface mount soldering. Try first with some scrap boards until you get the hang of it. You wouldn't want to damage your valuable card or some IC.

even if i am willing to learn, in this case given how valuable the destination card is, i might ask someone experienced to do it

anyways, finding the exact card but a broken one with the exact voltages and timings/frequencies that has functioning memories is going to be nearly statistically impossible
what i could do is getting replacement memories for the donor card, but slower ones that are readily available. so the 9600 would just be slowed down slightly rather than dying altogether
