I recent acquired a Gateway 2000 486SX/25 and I, for the life of me, cannot get this thing to read floppy drives.

It came with a Micronics 09-0093xx board and it came with a MIO-400 KF Revision 6 Floppy/IDE (and game port and COM port) controller.

No matter what drive i try to use, even verified good ones from other computers, they all have “diskette read error” pop up on the bios. First I tried the CMOS battery, nothin’. Then I tried the floppy cables, still nothin’. Just swapped out the power supply too before of voltage dips. Still a big fat nothin. Same error. My next idea is to swap out the controller board, but any other ideas to try before that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Can you post a picture of the motherboard and pull the MIO-400 and take it's picture and post it ?
It does sound like a floppy controller issue if the drives work elsewhere AND you have the BIOS set proper.
If you checked the MIO-400 jumpers and they seem proper then I would swap out that controller ASAP !

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

The floppy drive turns on.

Update. I got the drive reading by changing the power supply again, got far enough to install dos 6.22, now it’s back to not reading floppies again ???? So confused
