Hi, all

Several sources say that the CPU "part" of MediaGX is based on the Cyrix 5x86 core (e.g.). One of the more interesting features of Cyrix 5x86 is that it can be slowed down by lowering the multiplier to 1x (and AFAIK only to 1x) via software — e.g., by setmul.

Does anybody know if MediaGX inherits that feature? If so, is there any piece of software that can change the multiplier of that chip?

According to the MediaGX databook the configuration register for the multiplier is read-only, so it's unfortunately not possible.

Ah, too bad. This would've made MediaGX a lot more useful as a DOS gaming platform

Thanks for taking the time to find this though!

The way the MediaGX handled the bus speed, memory speed, onchip peripheral speed and multiplier was very strange.

You would think CPU cool would be able to change the FSB even if the chip doesn’t support power savings features like multiplier changes
