Hello everyone,

I want to swap cpus between two hp pavilion ze 4900
laptops.The one has a pentium m and the other a centrino m.The sockets are identical.Can I do this?

Since it's between the same model there should be no trouble with swapping them over.

If they're both Pentium M CPUs then the only difference that makes one a Pentium and one a Centrino is the brand of the motherboard chipset and wireless card. Only Intel CPU + Chipset + Wireless card get to be called Centrino in the BIOS splash screen and on case stickers.
So using a Broadcom wifi card or a Sis chipset limits it to a lowly Pentium M 😁 No real performance or functional differences at all, only cosmetic.

Which models are they? I'm... not sure... that a Banias would work on a board meant for a Dothan, even if both used socket 479.

Have you checked HP's maintenance and service guide to see if the CPU you want to put in is listed as supported?

Ok,thank you,I will try it,I have no wireless card.I wonder if I can flash the bios to update the splash screen?

I'd be careful assuming that. Different revisions of the same model might have different motherboards. I'd double-check that first.

If it's the same board and BIOS version, they should be fully interchangeable.

That said, if the laptops are identical, why swap in the first place? Wouldn't it be easier to just swap HDD between the two?

It says the laptop supports the CPUs, varying by model. It doesn't say that all CPUs work on every model. They probably will in this case, but this document does not guarantee that.

As a see,the only difference between the laptops is the svideo port.

I can swap the hdd,but one motherboard has the volume up switch broken.

Make a list to confirm your

• Detailed HP model number ("ZE4900" is a big umbrella with many sub-models)
• CPU models, down to five alphanumeric Silicon Layer numbers ("SLxxx") if you already have direct physical access to your CPU, or extract details (family, stepping, revision, etc.) with a diagnostic/benchmark program
• Latest BIOS versions available for each computer
• Motherboard models, revisions, and chips of north/south bridges

if possible.

Like others have suggested: If everything but CPU were the same then swapping CPU should be safe. If there were more differences then you might want to attach the list here so others could provide more info and insights.

Except the Svideo ,it's the same,I think the one is a ze4915 and the other a ze4951.

The one Cpu is a pentium m sl6n6 1400/512
I have no direct access to the other cpu now,sorry.

There are multiple generations of Pentium M; the ones listed in that manual seem to be the 400FSB which I think was the first gen (Banias).

[Edit - edited my post, I mixed up Banias and Dothan...]

As I see the laptop supports both Banias and Dothan,but I an not sure if this is right for all models.
