It's been a while since I posted here, but I am delighted to share with those who might be interested, the release of my book, "Serious Machines: The Story of the Computers That Built the Modern World."
My special interest is in workstations—serious machines—that were designed to do serious work: computer-aided design that helped develop modern automobiles and aircraft, simulations that uncovered the secrets of the universe and enabled us to simulate nuclear explosions without harming our environment, and analytical systems that forecast markets and built modern finance.
These are the machines that my new book is focused on. I cover many of the seminal companies: Sun, Silicon Graphics, DEC, IBM, and others. In the last third of the book, I also explore the future of serious computing: quantum, in-memory, at-the-edge, and more.
I’ve tried to make this more of a story than a technical manual or engineer’s reference, with the general reader in mind. I’ve also included a large number of images from my own personal collection. The book also has some custom renders of SGI, Next and other machines you might find interesting. The cover is one of them...
I hope you'll give it a look. It's on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Serious-Machines-Story … n/dp/B0DG8NL83P, Audible, and widely available via Ingram's network.
