Hello! I'm working on trying to build some .94b soundbanks for use in a SAM9713. I'm using the tools found on the "Dream 97PNP2" thread Re: Dream 97PNP2 - Interesting SAM9707 prototype\sample ISA MIDI card from 2001! . I've managed to get a process running by which I can patch the sound bank of a musical instrument with a SAM9713 by using the 94WBANK.EXE bank editor, using a precompiled .94B soundbank, using its "transfer to ROM" function with the correct values, and replacing the contents of a dump of the original ROM -- basically concatenating the original firmware and a different soundbank. This is working perfectly for any of the official Dream 1Mbit .94B soundbanks. I can also create my own using SF2 → AWAVE → DLS → DLSREAD.EXE → .94I, .94L → 94WBANK.EXE as before, but this only works imperfectly: something I have yet to determine crashes the SAM9713 or reads the loop points wrong and the first note will play but then get caught forever in its loop until reboot. Anyway, this is just for context. My question is:

I would really like to be able to edit .94I files, and the tool for this seems to be 94WINST.EXE. However, I have tried everything I can think of except for having a SAM9707 sound card installed, and I can't get any version of this to run. I am always greeted by a dialog "File not found" and early exit. Has anyone successfully run this program?

Some things I have tried:

  • the PNP cd in the thread above, considering this the canonical version
  • the "MIDI font editor update" from HOONTECH http://www.hoontech.de/download/soundcards.html
  • redistributions from a number of other drivers found on retronn.de, some of which appear to be different versions
  • running in VMs including Win 3.1, Win 2000, Win 95
  • ensuring updated versions of dependencies like the various .vbx files, vbrun300.dll, 94dll16.dll, 94dll32.dll, 94lib.dll
  • I found the installer added a registry key My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\control\MediaResources\Dream with Firmware and Sound keys pointing to a .bin and .94b in c:\97tools, and I ensured those files were there
  • I tried attaching a debugger but this appears to be a 16-bit old executable so there wasn't much I could do

I feel like if anyone in the world has gotten this program to run ever, they may be on this board. Please speak up if you have any ideas at all! Or know of any other tool that can edit a .94I file. I'd love to get Ed!son 1.9 running, but it just hangs in my VM. It's possible if I could run this on a real PC with a SAM-based card I'd get further... I have a lead on this but it will take some time.

Thank you!
