I'm trying to get my Sound Blaster Live! (SB0100 model) to play nicely with windows 98 / DOS and it works fine in win9x games but when i use anything DOS related (Duke3d / Epic Pinball) the sound is crackly and some times slows down!? Surely SB16 emulation isn't that bad on these cards? Also i cannot get midi to work at all.

Am i missing something? As it sounds awful!

It is that bad unfortunately, I've usually had luck setting games to use GeneralMIDI for music which helps avoid slowdowns in Rise of the Triad. Duke3d has a bug on non-ISA sound cards where it will crash without a patch, found here: http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm . Could you share what resources the SB emulation driver is using in device manager?

I've never had much luck using SB live cards for anything dos related. Always disappointment somewhere along the line. If you absolutely have to use a PCI card there are better options. If your mobo has a "sb link" connector then a card that can use it is the way to go for dos compatibility
