I see your motherboard has a VIA chipset? I'm not sure if it's one of the specific models effected by the "VIA PCI Latency" bug, but the symptoms you describe could be caused by it. I can't actually find much good information that. But there is a patch that addresses it here.

https://www.georgebreese.com/net/software/#PCI

Win95/DOS 7.1 - P233 MMX (@2.5 x 100 FSB), Diamond Viper V330 AGP, SB16 CT2800
Win98 - K6-2+ 500, GF2 MX, SB AWE 64 CT4500, SBLive CT4780
Win98 - Pentium III 1000, GF2 GTS, SBLive CT4760
WinXP - Athlon 64 3200+, GF 7800 GS, Audigy 2 ZS

What kind of issues? Most if not all modern SSDs have trim and garbage collection on the controller already.

And even if you use some old SSD drive, it most likely isn’t a big issue because these systems usually get relatively low hours so it takes ages for SSDs in them to wear down. And when the drive finally gives up, just buy a new one for 15-20€.

Alright, thanks!

Do i have to "align" the drive as well?
Just read about it here on Vogons, so i guess ill have to do that first...

There is zero benefit from partition alignment on these old systems, because SSD performance is so seriously bottlenecked by the IDE. So even if SSD read/write performance is 25% lower, you won’t even notice it. Just use it like you would a regular vintage HDD on such system and enjoy.

Great thanks 😀

Update:

Same problem persists after installing Win98SE with a SSD Drive and an Adapter (Startech)

Im going to try another motherboard with Intel Chipset instead, before this im also switching the IDE cable.

Driving me crazy....

Wasn't there some problem with data corruption with VIA chipsets + Soundblaster cards?
Haven't had this combination in any form so can't speek out of personal experience. But may be worth to examine by leaving the soundcard out of the system (or testing same components on Intel chipset).

Edit: Seems to affect only 686B southbridges. Your board should have 686A so that may not be the cause of your problem.

RetroPC: K6-III+/400ATZ @6x83@1.7V / CT-5SIM / 2x 64M SDR / 40G HDD / RIVA TNT / V2 SLI / CT4520
ModernPC: Phenom II 910e @ 3GHz / ALiveDual-eSATA2 / 4x 2GB DDR-II / 512G SSD / 750G HDD / RX470

Sounds familliar, will try without the card.
Then, whats the point of the build...might as well switch the motherboard 😀

Update!

Loose PCI-Cards was the cause of all this trouble!

I raised up the motherboard a few mm from the chassi, and voila, all works 100% now.
Rock solid 😀
Can´t believe this....
