My wife uses mostly all Razer hardware on her system, and for her wallpapers, she likes to use the AI ones generated by Razer Axon, powered by Leonardo Ai. Some of them look pretty cool, even though you do get odd "artifacts" like people with 3 extra limbs, missing limbs, or other such weirdness.

So, I decided to see what it would create based on my instructions, and the results are shown below. They definitely don't look as good as the ones my wife uses, but hers are all mostly "fantasy" based, where as I went with a retro computing/gaming theme. These look much more like the AI generated imagery I'm used to seeing, full of artifacts and quite odd to look at, but still interesting to see what it does based on these instructions.

Thought it was worth sharing my silly results. 😀

Instructions: "A collection of 1980's and 1990's home computers and parts on a desk or table."

Interesting. It looks like it's out of a bad dream or something, the keys from the keyboard are like hands. Hard to render. Nice you shared it.

That computer from 1995 looks eerily like it belongs in 1985 instead. At first glance it looks OK, but as soon as I look deeper it seems like an alien tried to make a room that would make a human like me comfortable but had no context for or appreciation for the details.

I think "Beautifully creepy" sums it up nicely. Some things are recognizable while others are ... not so much ... and some just look weirdly cool. Like a weird fever dream.

With Axon, you can do so many free renders in a time frame, I believe it's 8 per month. So I have 4 more to use before the end of September. You're limited to 1920x1080, but that's for me. Especially since I'm only messing around for fun.

I want to try doing one as pixel art and see how it turns out. Perhaps try one being even more specific and one being more vague. The last one will probably be themed around a specific game, like Doom. I will be messing with it over the weekend and I'll post my results.

Would love to see what other people come up with if they happen to ever try out the software.

It certainly made up some interesting things (is that an Apple computer/copier/fax/scanner?) but they all look melted and broken like something someone found at the bottom of a pile in a barn and cleaned extensively despite being completely broken.

That 1995 home PC indeed looks a tad in the wrong decade. 🤣
The desktop on the side looks more like a punch/hole card reader, haha.

On a sidenote, AI generated crap is the reason why I pretty much stopped collecting digital art from the internet anymore.
Actual human-generated digital artwork has details that are simply not there with AI. Even the "poor" (learner) Photoshop edits are more fun to look at, as at least they show the inexperience of the user with the program. In contrast, AI "art", be it good or bad, just feels totally dead to me.
Like with writing, it may be good to give you an idea/concept/head start... but in its pure form, it's... just not for me. 😀

That being said, I don't mean to discourage anything that was done/shown here so far. After all, AI is still new technology and worth exploring in different ways. I just can't take it seriously enough yet to replace most things done by humans. A little bit like self-driving cars: they can get the majority of the task done, but the user (driver) still needs to be there and pay attention to make sure the technology doesn't do something "funny".

I never thought that AI would have more trouble drawing computers than people, but here we go. These images are literally like photorealistic renderings of a preschooler's drawings.

I suspect that you are very cross at that and I dare hope that the king of the potato people will forgive and forget. 😉

More seriously, I don't believe something could have ended up so squarely in the middle of the "uncanny valley", even if it had been intentional.

Well, I played around with it a little more. It seems to avoid anything with specific names or brands, probably a good idea to avoid copyright issues. Still, I don't think this one turned out as bad as some of the others. I also played around with different styles, the originals were mostly default or "general".

Instruction: "A 10 year boy on the floor in the living room playing Atari video games on a color console television in 1982 at night."
Style: Anime

I also tried a similar instruction as earlier, but with "1985" instead of "1995" and removed "CD-ROM" but replaced it with "posters on the wall". I also set the style to "Pixel Art", but, for some reason, that didn't work. 😜

I've got two more tokens to use up, so I'll do those later on today. 😀

I have more free "tokens" to use up. Any requests? I'll post the results.

I need a "detailed description" of the image. A "Finetuned Model" and "Style" selected. You can see the option in the image below. 😀

I wonder if the AI imagines that blue is the correct colour for a screen because we all take lots of photos of blue screens of death? 🤣

"Retro" = C64 = blue basic screen...

These images highlight a lot of the limitations of current iteration of AI generative art. It's basically just copying surface level details without foundational understanding of geometry, perspective or form. Hence, some of the shapes of the 'computers' look half-melted and distorted.

Same with the alien child, with its foot merging into an electronic device, the alien looking hand, and that it's sitting on something that looks like a person's leg.

AI also doesn't recognize light sources, so a lot of these have indistinct and incorrect lighting.

IMHO, AI generative art still has a *long* way to go before it will ever replace human artists.

Well...it tried. haha

This actually made me laugh.

Just for fun, here are a few more I've tried out. Mainly using the pixel art preset and various other style modifiers using terms like "pixel art" and "cyberpunk" in the text descriptions used to created the images.

I tired to get it to actually spell out "Classic Geek" and "VOGONS" a few times, with varying levels of success. It doesn't seem to like legible text in any form, perhaps an imposed restriction for copyright or safety reasons, or just something Leonardo AI has issues with, not sure.

These are five of the ones that I thought actually came out pretty good. 😀

Yeah, I really liked what it was trying to do. I'm getting better with instructing it on what I want and learning it's limitations.

One of my recent "creations" came out much better than I had anticipated. I was going for the "core of a retro cyberpunk mainframe" and went into detail concerning the use of geometric patterns, copper pipes/wires, vacuum tubes, and various other components. This was my end result. I liked it so much it's now the wallpaper on my bench lab PC. 😀

My first impression here was "a prop out of Fritz Lang's Metropolis".

BTW, I enjoy watching the fruits of your efforts. Thank you for sharing .

The less photorealistic ones don't venture into the uncanny valley realm and resonate more with me.
