What do you guys think of these chips? In my experience they had pretty reliable SB compatibility. I've used ESS688 and ESS1688 I believe and both did the job with SBPro support that *just worked*. I've been pondering getting one with a daughterboard connector.

they're noisy. in some games they even have pitch issues

ESS cards *just work* and that's what i like about them. my choice for dos and pci-only setups.

You mean like every SB16 and AWExx I've ever used? 😀 My SCD-15 hates them too, suffering from the sticky notes problem. I just bought a original non-PNP SB16 (CT1740) off ebay in hopes that it will work with that DB.

More noisy than either card. The ESS1688 doesn't even sound like real 16-bit (more like 12) and its 16-bit sound can not be used in DOS

in some games, like HMI games, have their sound frequency halved when ESS is used.
