Yup, those would be fine.

Are they pretty much the same? If so I guess I'd go with the cheaper one. There's not much price difference so if one is better than the other I'll take that one.

Yes, the PCB layouts are different, but they are basically the same card.

I ended up getting one of the Addonics cards. Where can I get DOS drivers for it? What would the autoexec.bat line for it be (some sort of SET BLASTER command?)

I use UNISOUND since these cards are plug 'n play: UNISOUND - Universal ISA PnP Sound Card Driver for DOS v0.82a

You just include a SET BLASTER command to set the hardware parameters and then run UNISOUND to enable the card and set mixer settings.

What SET BLASTER parameters should I use? Also, if I want to use my MT-32 with this card what do I need to do?

I'd start with standard Sound Blaster settings and see if that works. For example:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 F388 P330 T4

To use it with an MT-32, you'll need a 15-pin joystick to MIDI adapter and a MIDI cable to connect to the MT-32.

Something like this would work: https://www.serdashop.com/DB15MIDI

I have one of those. I don't need any special autoexec.bat entries like I did with the AWE32? It should just work with the MT-32?

It should just work, provided the port setting in the game is set to the same as initialized with UNISOUND. Since 330 is typically the default, it'll likely work with everything.

The only issue might any games that use Intelligent Mode. You'll need SoftMPU for that.

One more question. Now that I've moved my AWE32 to my Pentium and I'm no longer using the MT-32 with it, how do I adjust my autoexec.bat? Here's what I had:

set sound=c:\SB16
set blaster=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
set midi=synth:2 map:G mode:2
C:\sb16\diagnose /s
C:\sb16\aweutil /s
c:\sb16\mixerset /p /q

You can get rid of all those lines and replace them with a SET BLASTER command followed by the driver initialization. If you use UNISOUND, it would look something like this:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 F388 P330 T4
C:\UNISOUND\UNISOUND /C1
(Note that the "C1" parameter is to enable the first sound card in the list of PnP sound cards, since I typically run multiple sound cards in my systems.)

I misunderstood, I thought this was in relation to the Yamaha card.

For the AWE32 you would only need to change the SET MIDI line to something like SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0

Oh so I can use the UNISOUND driver with both cards? That's handy.

I think I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about the settings you needed for the Yamaha card (replacing the AWE32).

If you're talking about the settings you are using for the AWE32, you would only need to change the set midi line to something like:

SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0

I believe that should be the default setting for the AWE32.

For the record, you can also use UNISOUND with the AWE32, but I believe you still need the AWEUTIL program for things like loading sound fonts. If you already have it working with the Creative Labs drivers, I would just leave it as is.

Ah yes. I was putting the Yamaha in my 486 and moving the AWE32 to my Pentium. Those lines I posted were what I had for my AWE32 when it was in my 486 and hooked up to my MT-32. Now that it's not hooked up to the MT-32 I was wondering which line I had to tweak for it.

So let me make sure I have this straight.

Yamaha with MT-32 (in my 486)
----------------
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 F388 P330 T4
C:\UNISOUND\UNISOUND /C1

AWE32 no MT-32 (in my Pentium)
---------------
set sound=c:\SB16
set blaster=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6
SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E MODE:0
C:\sb16\diagnose /s
C:\sb16\aweutil /s

Yup, that should work. As mentioned, the UNISOUND driver has various switches for different mixer settings, so you'll need to take a look at the instructions and tailor it to your own needs.

I'm finally getting around to setting this up, but I have a question on how to hook the MT-32 into the Addonics A151-910 card. Do I plug the audio from the MT-32 into the LINE IN port and the speakers into the Audio Out?

A note on the Yamaha and UNISOUND - it doesn't set up the mixer correctly so you won't get the stereo effect in games that manipulate the mixer. Wolf3D for example.

This is my experience anyway - I've raised it a couple of times in the UNISOUND thread with no response, so maybe it's just me. Same issue with Tiido's software from memory.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.
