Living proof eight there ^ 🤣

*right there

Why van I not edit? I guess I'm too nee to the boards?

Anyway, it works pretty good once I learned/remembered the old lesson that you cant have an optical drive as master on the same cable as a slave hard drive. Well...you can but things don't work reliably.

I also built and added a ps2xpico yesterday. Now that's a neat little device. I now have mouse working in dos.

Here's my slot A in the big blue Martian case c. 2001-ish, it takes full length cards, has a handle and opening fan door on the top, and on the door on the front the eyes used to light up softly. It's a bit buried because that build is finished and I've set up the test bench in front of it.

Hi Everyone! By way of introduction, here's my recent build, closely replicating the computer I had during college. I bought the base computer, which came with a crappy Trident 3D Image and no sound card. Added the AWE32 and upgraded to a Voodoo3. Full specs as follows:

So much that they get yellow. Retro machines are also better to pack in modern black houses because of proper cooling.
Even at the age of 286, I didn't understand how to pack such a modern stuff on such a crappy white house. At that time, modern Hi-Fi stuff was in a minimum of metal-silver.

I don't think original Pentiums and older have much problem with cooling. They just don't use much power. And to each their own I guess, but I like seeing the the AT case. For me it's just not right to put this stuff in a modern ATX case (AT systems that is).

The Prescott and Barton configurations are need for good cooling, contemporary CPU cooles and houses were not prepared for this, and the TDP suddenly increased.

For the previous ones, no problem, just ugly, but I have a lot of it 😀

Nice rig.

Contemporary P4/Barton cases still had the PSU on top for the most part, but you could still get properly cooled ones - usually with 1/2 intake fans on the bottom front and 1/2 rear exhaust fans on the top left, under the PSU. The CPU cooler, when oriented properly, would channel the hot air along this route and everything would be OK.

Sometimes you would see additional intake fans on the side panel and/or exhaust fans on the top, but these would typically be excessive. And in any case, those cases weren't white/beige either. I have a silver Thermaltake Lanmoto housing a P4 (Northwood, though) and a black Gigabyte Aurora housing a Core 2 Quad (Extreme).

The problem is that the lower in PSU chassis is upper PSU is in the house, the cables are just reaching.

Certainly P4 is a different animal than the original Pentium. The difference in TDP is roughly 10X.

Very nice! No floppy? I'm considering pulling the FDD from my case. I haven't used it once, and it conflicts with ram slot 4 and seats right against the ram in slot 3. A little electric tape on all corners helps ensure no issues, but it's starting to seem better to just delete it.

Greetings Vogons! I've been using this site as a source of information for many years but decided I might as well participate as well, starting by showing off my favorite retro build. I have quite a few others now that I can post about later, I wanted to keep this one a bit shorter!

Having been rescued from my grandpa's basement some years ago after it was replaced/discarded (due to a short circuit in the original Vibra 16) I've upgraded it as much as practical whilst keeping the 1999/Y2k vibe going and the core CPU/Mobo pair intact. I've dubbed it "Ath1337" for maximum 90s silliness.

Today it boasts:

  • Asus K7M ATX board with a 800 mhz Slot A Thunderbird Athlon
  • Voodoo 3 3000 AGP + Noctua 40mm fan
  • Soundblaster AWE64 Value CT4380 + SIMMCONN Revival AWE 64 Memory Expansion Card
  • Windows 98SE + UOSP3
  • 120GB SSD + SATA-IDE adapter inside a hotswap bay for easy backups

As well as:

  • 512 MB PC-133 (Running at 100) CL2, Micron
  • Enermax EG375P-VE ATX V1.3 PSU, with plenty of amperage on 3+5v
  • A pair of NEC DVD burners, the last of the functional IDE burners I have.
  • Internal LS120 superfloppy, lacking a bezel
  • Two additional 120G SSDs internally as cold backup, not useful unless I swap IDE cables.
  • NEC USB2 PCI card, benchmarked at around 9 MB/sec in Win98
  • VIA Firewire PCI card, External drive benchmarked around 34 MB/sec in Win98
  • Realtek RTL8169SC Gigabit card, benchmarked around 120 Mbps using Clonezilla Live CD/Samba

The case is a "Ultra Wizard Steel Series" labeled 2006, not exactly the original (beaten up) beige box - but honestly I just think it looks fantastic. I believe it's a knockoff of the Antec cases of the day? I now have the front USB and Firewire ports functional, thanks to some adapters.

Externally I've got quite the setup running too. Peripherals:

(Shared between my 4 primary retro computers via 90s KVM)

  • Gateway EV700 17" CRT
  • Unicomp New Model M PS2
  • Microsoft IntelliMouse PS2/Serial
  • Boston Acoustics 2.1 speakers, identical to what my dad had in the 2000s

(Dedicated peripherals)

  • 8bitdo SN30 Gamepad connected over Gameport via USB4VC Raspberry pi project
  • Handspring Visor Deluxe with USB cradle
  • LEGO Mindstorms robotic kit from late 90s, with serial transmitter

Some pictures! Here's my current "Retro Corner" desk:

Well, the expansion slots are certainly anything but "under-utilized". 😉

In this is none. For example, AMD is in a recreation, but it was not black 😀

I do not use it, the readability of the old discs is uncertain today. The ODD is more reliable and the flash drive can be used here. And for 386/486 I use GoTek.
