Hello everyone,

I've picked-up this Aztech I38-MMSN850 card but I failed to identify the exact model (see attached picture).

It is similar to this one Sound Galaxy Nova 16 Extra II but with few differences:

1. no IDESEL and JMPBO jumper setting on the bottom-left corner
2. no EC9, EC11, EC12, EC13 condo in the middle of the card
3. no JMPCFG jumper setting on top of the AZT816 chip
4. no JX1 jumper setting near the upper-right corner

And I'm just asking myself what would be the right DOS/Win9x drivers for this model.

Thank you.

Seems to be Multimedia Pro 16 ABI/ABO, but:
"The card was also sold to third parties who rebranded it. One example of this is the Toptek Golden Sound Pro 16 ES/MCD."

The alphanumeric identifier "I38-MMSN850" is just the FCC ID for this card.

On https://retronn.de/imports/hwgal/hw_aztech_cs4231a_2.html the picture of the alleged Sound Galaxy Nova 16 Extra II has the FCC ID "I38-MMSN850", but if you have a look at the drivers on the (mirrored) Aztech FTP (ftp://retronn.de/mirrors/ftp.aztech.com.sg/sg/NOV16EII/, see index.txt), it should have the FCC ID "I38-MMSN846" - I don't think it makes some remarkable difference, just wanted to note that.

BTW I own a very similar card which obviously seems to be an OEM card for Packard Bell.

Tbh, Aztech had such a mess of commercial names for their cards, both retail and OEM, that the FCC ID is the only decent unique identifier. MMSN850 it is then 😉

As for drivers: it doesn't need any for DOS. This card has the AZT2316 controller, which is a non-PnP chip. So all you need to do is to run the config tool to set resources. Windows does need drivers (can't recall if there are AZT2316 drivers in Win98SE by default; AZT2320 definitely is), and Grzyb's links contain both.

Thank you for your help.
Sadly, for now none of those drivers are working with this card.
I get "Sound card is not found!" or "Sound card is not detected!" depending on the driver version.

I found very strange to have all hw jumper settings removed from the card.
I found one photo from a Poland auction site which have all the jumpers and the capacitors, but the chip is an AZT2316 while mine is an AZT2316-S

Hm, I had a look at the index.txt in the FTP's top directory...there's no FCC ID "I38-MMSN850"mentioned, unfortunately.

Thank you for the link to the thread, but again no success at all.
I think it is definitely a broken item.

This card is not very promising considering that the previous owner removed several components from it.

With "JMPCFG" and "JMPB0" jumpers absent, It's now set to read resource config data from the EPROM chip, which may be corrupt. A simple test can be done to determine the operation of the card, just short pins 1-2 of "JMPB0" and pins 2-3 of "JMPCFG" jumpers with a solder blob, and enter this line anywhere in the autoexec.bat - "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5". This way card will use default SB resources in DOS environment and you won't even need a specific card driver for the sound to work in games and other programs, such as MOD trackers.

It would also be a good idea to add at least EC12 - 47uF and EC4 - 100uF before testing. Also make sure that there are no shorting pins on the main chip, because some appear to be.

Thank you for the details. I'm not sure I'm able to do that by myself. I may probably throw the baby to a friend...
