Hi, I'm new here and hope I post this in the right section.

I just finished a win 98 retro pc build, inspired by this guide
https://www.reddit.com/r/retrobattlestations/ … guably_fastest/

it has a asus m2v-tvm mobo and a NVidia GeForce 7800 GT pci-i gpu.
I just install win98 se and this driver:

Tweaked Unofficial NVIDIA Display Driver 82.69 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME from https://www.mdgx.com/files/nv8269.php

My GPU is listed there as supported and in the inf i see vendor and dev id.
It seems the driver is installed correctly, but it is alway stuck in 640x80. Also I can't change the colors from 16 to higher.

The gpu is working fine, as I've also tried it with Windows 7.

If anyone knows how to fix this, I'd be very happy!

I remember not having much luck with that driver in the past. It's a hacked driver so YMMV.

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O

thats the correct driver, so long as it says tweaked when you start the installer its the right one, the other one has problems, im guessing you installed the driver through control panel, installing the drivers files from a specific location, the problem with the driver is since it doesn't officially support the later cards it wont detect the invidia chipset and will fail to install, leaving the only option to install the files from a specific location on your hard drive, this will install the card but it wont install the nvidia control panel,

the solution is to run the nvidia installer with a card it does recognise, i use an nvidia 6200 (you can use any other card thats supported by the driver like a 5 series or maybe earlier you'd have to check) after the nvidia setup has finished it will ask to restart your computer, when the computer reboots thats when it will detect your card model and install it,

before the computer reboots i power off and switch out the 6200 for my 7950gt, once 98 boots it will detect the card and install it along with the nvidia control panel, (the control panel is important to have everything working correctly), saying this the last time i tried it wasnt working correctly, i think i tried a slightly earlier driver before 82.69 installed the 6200, then switched it out for the 7950gt, and directed it to a folder with the 82.69 files i extracted from the 8269.exe with winrar, so it was using the driver files from 8269 but the control panel from an earlier version of the driver.

one of these methods should get your card working, i used one of the methods on a 775 intel G31 board and an SB700 AMD AM2 board, both installed fine even tho the AMD board didnt have chipset driver, they can be a hassle to get working sometimes you just need to persevere, but they do work as long as you use the tweaked driver and avoid the other hacked 8269 driver (which is broken and will cause many diffeent problems), and make sure you have nvidia control panel installed as well

Pretty sure on the thread that others 'just' got it working. Also in readme it says you can install via .inf?

I thought it was maybe a lack of chipset drivers. I just installed 5.14A VIA chipset drivers from philscomputerlab and then installed graphics driver again, but no dice.

Don't know how to edit a post, so new comment.

Weird thing is that after clean install of win 98 se, there are two items under Display adapters.
One has standard vga and other standard pci vga. one of the has a yellow !. I can remove one and when I try to remove the other, the system hangs.
I then shutdown with power button and reboot again. Then new hardware for display adapter is found before I get into Desktop and I select Standard VGA PCI-E (VGA).
Then there is only one adapter.

After that I install the nvidia tweaked driver and I get the situation in the screenshot above.
As mentioned, it looks like the driver is installed but it doesn't do anything. As soon as I set another res or color depth, I have to restart and windows said display adapter can't handle changes.

Remove both, reboot, should get STD vga, then change in device manager by hunting for the inf manually.
It may or may not work. 9x was always a cow in that regard.

Can't remember exactly, but try in command:
cd \
dir /s nv*.cpl

if you find it, run it

Dunno what else to try except uninstalling and reinstalling a few times.

Are there any other modded drivers that might work?
My understrength is that it's just adding the card to the inf files

Installed service pack 2.1a and only installed important updates. Then reinstaller nvidia driver. No luck unfortunately. It seems win 98 is booting, I see a cursor blinking and then only black screen. And then all of a sudden the monitor goes on standby as if it goes out of sync

Important updates = bug fixes.

I'm thinking directx and .Net which is why I said "do them all"
