never mind I think I got it working, installed from cd and used the voodoorush patch exe. Looks like not all games show the 3dfx logo when starting.

So now I am facing issues with Doom trying to use Midi for the game music. I have an AWE32 CT3900 non PNP edition.
When I start command prompt only, and then sart AWEUTIL /EM or AWEUTIl /EM:GM, it will load the TSR correctly and load SYNTHGM.SBK with "Set MIDI to emulation to General MIDI"
In Doom setup I select the Music card as General Midi, and FX as Sound Blaster. However when I start Doom, I hear a few notes of the into music, and just a black screen.
But when I boot into Windows 98, and through command prompt, start Doom it plays perfectly with the Midi music..

in Doom 2 it works fine If I use AWE32 as the music card even without loading AWEUTIL /EM, however when choosing General Midi music card, and loading the TSR, Doom2 will exit with a random error just before it starts.
