Hello Vogons, it's nice to be back! Real world stuff out of the way and I have embarked on a 486 build as I always fancied one back in the day and very loosely based on that which is discussed here.

So jumping in feet first I bought a decent looking board that appears to be this one off of the bay of fleas, one which looked fairly good condition in the photos but i did notice the NiCd battery still present - damage not overly evident in the photos.

So it's arrived and the first thing I did was remove the battery which in fact had leaked. Proceeded to then give a vinegar -> 70% IPA -> 99% IPA cleaning sequence and let it dry. Can definitely see some damage to traces but not convinced it's terminal. Also, the processor was inserted wrongly in the socket so I hope it hasn't been powered up with it being socketed like that, I've rotated it so the cutaway on the processor is the same corner as the hinge of the socket 3 ZIF mechanism.

So I defer to the greater minds of the vogosphere, does it look terminal? fixable? Will the cpu orientation having been wrong have cooked anything?

I dont think its final terminated

1) measure and recover traces and vias
2) remove cpu and look at the socket are there any fired pins in socket?

Need help? Begin with photo and model of your hardware 😉

The battery damage doesn't look bad at all. I've seen much worse.

Can't really speak to what might have happened with the CPU. Only thing to do is repair the battery damaged traces and see what other potential faults there might be.
