Hello everyone,
I recently obtained a Pioneer DVD-104S slot loading DVD-ROM drive to upgrade my Liteon CD-RW drive in my Windows 98 desktop. After installing it and booting into Windows 98, I tried putting in a copy of Quake II but the drive spit it out after 2 seconds. I tried multiple CDs, CD-RWs and DVDs but got the same result. Windows recognizes the drive and I did manage to find some firmware on the Pioneer website but that did not fix it. The drive does power on and the [BUSY] LED light flashes when the desktop powers on. I tried the basic troubleshooting steps (swapping IDE cables, adjusting master/slave pins, etc) but nothing seemed to get the drive to stop spitting out discs seconds after inserting them.

I'm not familiar with slot-loading drives in desktops and I'm not sure if there is something going on with my system. I did swap my Liteon drive back in and it worked perfectly so I'm really not sure.
I'm including a link I found of the same drive if this helps.
Thanks

It probably will need some lens / laser assembly cleaning, and for good measure all the rollers and any foam pads in the slot to prevent the mechanism from scratching the discs during insert/eject process.

After you insert a disc, and before it gets spit out, do you hear the disc spinning in the drive?

Not really. I hear some whirring sounds while the disc is being inserted and when it gets ejected. The busy LED doesn't light up during this process. The LED only lights up during the initial startup.

I did try to use an optical drive cleaning disc but that got spit out almost immediately. I'll try to disassemble the drive when I get the chance.
