Hello all so I built a vintage PC a little over a year ago and I have had good luck with it until recently, I noticed that anytime I run a game that has the main menu in 640x480 the screen is all zoomed in, I don't know what could have caused this, it just started doing it one day. All other resolutions are fine in game its just games that run in 640x480. Any suggestions on what it might be or what has caused this? I have been installing a lot more of my old games as of late, I wonder if something that I installed messed with it....... it also does it when I restart the PC and the bios and splash screen is also all zoomed in. Thanks for any help.

Modern System:
Intel i9 12900k liquid cooled
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080
64GB RAM @3600mhz
WD Blue 1TB SSD
Samsung 1 TB NvME drive

Vintage system:
Pentium 3 600mhz coppermine
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
383MB PC100 RAM
Iomega ZiP 100
80GB Hard drive
Windows 98

Is there a zoom or possibly overscan option on your monitor or TV that is mode (resolution) specific and is set to zoom/overscan 640x480 only ?

What brand/model display are you using and are you using a scaler or converter of some kind between the video card and the display ?

You know I actually thought of this the other day. I bet it’s my vga to hdmi converter that’s messing up. I am using one that I got off Amazon so I could have my pc hooked up to a modern display. I might just buy a new one and see if that fixes it.

I came across a similar weird behavior of a Voodoo3 with my LCD display a few years ago, though the effect was a bit different, a 'greenish' color tint in 640x400. In my case, it was caused by CRTC parameters used by 3dfx in that resolution, and I could correct the output setting proper values programmatically. As I remember from my research back then, these values have been fixed in the latest BIOS revisions of Voodoo5, so all earlier 3dfx cards (starting from Banshee) may be not fully compatible with modern monitors.
