Hi

Someone previously suggested I use the Nvidia 30.82 drivers for my GPU, however they don’t appear to work. My card seems to be listed for them on Phil’s Computer Lab though. I have the Nvidia RIVA TNT2. I keep getting this error when I try to install:

Setup was unable to locate a detected device’s PCI ID in NVAML.INF.

Is there a workaround for this? Or are there other recent drivers for this card that are just as stable as 30.82? I decided to try some different and ‘recent’ stable drivers in case the ones I had previously were causing crashes and errors.

Thanks

OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU: Pentium III Katmai 450MHz (SL35D)/Pentium III Coppermine 933MHz (SL448)
RAM: SK Hynix 128MB 100MHz/Kingston 256MB 133MHz
GPU: Nvidia 16MB Riva TNT/Geforce 128MB 4 MX 440
Motherboard: MSI-6156/Abit BE6-II

To be clear, the other driver versions that you tried installed correctly?

i had the exact same error yesterday which id never seen before, i was installing my nvidia 7950gt on a motherboard that was being problematic with win98, i used the tweaked drivers which id done countless times installed with an nvidia 6200, as i wasnt getting the nvidia control panel i uninstalled the driver and tried an earlier driver with the 6200 plugged in but it was giving me this error, i was like wtf i know this is the right driver, i opened the NVAGP.INF in the .exe and the 6200 is listed so i dont know wtf is going on, i assumed it was the motherboard as it just wasnt playing well with 98 as it was using too many resources and i thought that was something to do with it, plus i'd never seen that error before, im guessing my install is just bugged and i need to wipe my hdd and start again.🤣

also the 98 install i was using on this PCI-e board was a backup from another board that was its AGP equivelent, it was a base install without any drivers but there were some things in the autoexec and config.sys that may have been causing problems, but i was using this backup on completely different hardware as well so i dont know wtf, only option may be a clean reinstall.

Stick to the 6.31's or 8.05's. Anything past that was a dumpster fire for TNT2 and hindered its performance greatly under Windows 98.

I think I’ve only had one install correctly so far and the version number escapes me now.

NVAML.INF… NVAGP.INF… Where are these even located? The AGP one is a given, but what the heck does AML mean?

they're the same thing just named differently depending on driver version, it contains the device ID's for all the supported cards, if you open the drivers .exe with winrar, then open the file NVAML.INF/NVAGP.INF with notepad or wordpad, scroll to the bottom it will have a list of all the supported cards.

Ahh, okay. Thank you. 😀

I'm going to try some previous driver versions, too. Just before 30.82. See if they fair any better. And I've grabbed the so-called Final Drivers from here.

Okay, turns out that it's just Riva TNT. Not sure where I got the 2 from. I settled on the Final Drivers that were posted here and they seem to have worked. 😀

I did check out the NVAML.INF file, but the GPUs look to be listed with a code name of sorts, so I couldn't tell if this chip was listed.
