Hi,

Trying to return this floppy back to live. While the head motor works well, the drive motor didn't work at all. Two leaky capacitors C2 and C3 were easily identified while PCB Inspecting. The element marked as a XT1 looked very suspicions and I'm certainly sure that it is dead too. Unfortunately I can not identify, what is this, tried to google what "XT" is mean, but without the success. Would be appreciated if you help me to identify this part, I'll order a replacement and will try to fix this drive.

It looks like a ceramic resonator which is basically the clock source for the main chip. I'm not sure what frequency it is though, 202 suggests perhaps 2kHz.

Thank you, this may help. Will search in this direction.

Weird component. For a resonator it would go straight to two consecutive pins on some chip. Here
- both of its pins go to VIAs, very not line a resonator
- both also connect to caps, very resonator like
- only one connects to IC1 (sf9101A no datasheet available) pin 34, pin 35 has a via tho

check if pin 33 or 35 connects to other pin of XT1

The attachment conecting.jpg is no longer available

anyway looks like those two electrolytics always leak, another repair where they corroded around XT1 https://shiuntenlos.ie-yasu.com/98ma0120.htm

hmm found a YT clip with different vendor part https://youtu.be/I2NqK_CJA9M?feature=shared&t=459 uploaded just 2 weeks ago 😮
Its kyocera KBR-Y Series "2-terminal kHz band surface mountable ceramic resonator". 983Y2 = 983KHz https://www.kyocera-avx.com/docs/techinfo/Res … ors/smceram.pdf

But most likely this part is fine, what might not be fine are VIAs eaten by capacitor juice.

Yeah, it is unlikely the resonator is bad but bad vias are quite probable. There can also be some capacitor juice under the chips and if not neutralized and rinsed out proper, problems will not stop. L1 looks a bit sad, it should be checked that it hasn't gone open circuit.

Thank you for your advice, will check the vias, connections and L1 this evening and return back with the results

also VR1 might be responsible for tuning spinning speed, if its damaged by juice and went open circuit that could cause motor controller problems

OK, here are some results:
did additional board cleanup cycle.
L1 is OK and connected to IC3 pin 14 and both capacitors C2 and C3
XT1 pads connected to the IC1 through the pins 33, 35 and 36, see my draft drawing
so maybe only capacitors C2 and C3 should be replaced, will order them and try to run it.
