After searching for many years, I finally found the optional cache module for my old Compaq 486. I installed it and it tests OK with the diagnostics program, but for some reason it makes the sound card (AWE64 Value) stop working. I can't find any conflicts, and I tried 2 different CPU's, different jumper settings, moved the sound card to another slot, all to no avail.
When I boot the system, I can hear the Windows startup sound for a split second before it stops, and from that point on nothing makes any sound. Neither the Windows or DOS drivers give any error messages. Once I remove the cache module, everything goes back to normal. It just bums me out because I really wanted to use that module that was so difficult to find, and not exactly cheap either.
Any ideas what could be going on?
