Hi, long time lurker first time poster here.
I was looking at my Macintosh SE today and considering the scuffs, scratches, and discoloration when I had a thought.
What if you put some kind of vinyl contact paper on the case of a compact Mac? I don't know how I would feel about, for example, a wood grain Macintosh SE but now I kind of want to find out.
Further, what if you swapped the CRT for amber?
Has anyone done this before?

Think about it-

if its that wrap you buy from your local diy store i wouldnt bother wrapping anything unless its pretty square, i wrapped a marshall amp years ago with a woodgrain vinyl wrap, most of it looked pretty good but the top panel wasnt square it was slightly recessed and just didnt look good, for things that arent perfectly square like monitors, look into hydro dipping, also the heat from a crt might cause a sticky wrap to de-laminate.

I'd imagine that the bezel directly adjacent to the tube would be best off black, and now that you mention it, hydro dipping could be really cool. I think the little nooks and recesses would be TERRIBLE to laminate, but hydro dipping, hmm.....

you might have some luck if you can find a thin stretchy wrap like they use on cars that would probably fit the nooks better, but the stuff in your pic was the stuff i used it was thicker and not stretchy and just wouldnt go around the curved bits neatly, but yeah the black bezel sound good with a dark woodgrain wrap it would resemble some styles of audio amps from the 70's/80's, i was thinking about going for the same colour scheme with one of my old cases, theres a company not too far from me that does hydro dipping but its a 3 hour round drive.

Not me, but…
Option 1 - swap the whole screen with another compatible one (size, curvature, neck diameter, pinout, voltages - it's probably easier than it looks like as 12 V filaments have been common in mono tubes until the very end, OTOH you probably know how hard it is to find datasheets for them), keep the original deflection coils to cut out the other 60% of variables

Option 2 - actually replace the phosphor, OK probably not for you or me, but "easy" for Alexander Zawada (the Polish man most known for refurbishing tubes after the last indie business doing this closed) 😀

If only VTM, barely 15 km from my house, was still around… ("Any color you like as long as the other is black")
