Nov 23, 2024: Help us to test the upcoming ScummVM 2.9.0!
Posted by sev

We've been working for a while on the next ScummVM release, and it is time for a call for public testing.

Support for a number of new engines and games for the existing ones was added, and we need your special attention to the following titles:

Orion Burger.
Total Eclipse and Total Eclipse 2.
Thimbleweed Park.
The Space Bar.
Moonbase Commander. (with multiplayer support)
Backyard Basketball.
Unrest.
Rise of the Dragon.
Castle Master.
Wait for it! Issue 3. Song for a Hare. (Ну, погоди! Выпуск 3. Песня для зайца)
Mask Show. (Маски-шоу)
Marvellous Mice Adventures: Meeting Sea Rat. (Три маленькие белые мышки. Визит Морской крысы)
The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik. (Похождения бравого солдата Швейка)
Marvellous Mice Adventures: Sea Rat's Birthday. (Три маленькие белые мышки. День рождения морской крысы)

Besides these newly supported games, almost half of the current 108 engines have notable changes. Thus, testing more games is always a good thing.

All testing must be done with stable builds, not development ones. Please report bugs or oddities on our issue tracker.

A detailed list of all exciting new features and fixes is available in our NEWS file.

We are looking forward to your reports about successful and unsuccessful playthroughs and bugs reported!

One of the devs mentioned a specific request for help with some LucasArts games in this thread:

Another thing that would be great if people could help out with...

There has been quite a bit of work recently improving the support for the Macintosh versions of Loom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Monkey Island 1, Monkey Island 2, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. As a result, ScummVM has gotten a bit pickier about what it recognizes as a known version. Therefore, it would be great if people who own any of these could check if ScummVM recognizes them and that you get the Macintosh user interface. (You may have to check the "Enable the original GUI and Menu" setting for the game, if that hasn't been done automatically.) If everything works, you should be able to see something like this:

In addition to the original releases, it is known that there were at least a couple of updates distributed. What we don't know is if we've accounted for all of them.

Note that there is a known issue with at least one version of Monkey Island 1, where the data files have empty resource forks. Dumper Companion will extract those as MacBinary, where ScummVM expects them to be the data fork only. At least that was the case recently. There has been talk of adding an option to skip empty resource forks, but I don't think anything has been done about it.

Also note that this is about the original releases of these games, not the Steam re-releases. E.g. Steam has the 256 color versions of Loom and Last Crusade, not the original 16 color versions. The Steam versions are expected to still work of course, and if they don't that's a bug. But they don't yet benefit from any of the work here.
