Fair use/fair dealing exception

You may already know DOOM8088. During the last weeks it has improved a lot. Earlier versions already were running on 8088 and 80286, but only in the rare config of having a VGA card in such a machine. Now it has been improved by Frenkel to support also TXT mode in 40x25, 80x25 and 80x43, MDA, CGA and EGA. That makes it interesting now to test it on REAL HARDWARE.

My current tests are on an Olimarck Top 15 laptop which is a really strange machine produced by IQL (Ingternational Quartz Limited) of Hong-Kong in 1986/87. It's having a 8:3 80x25 CGA LCD panel, 640 kB of RAM, no harddisk, but two 5.25 ich 360 kB floppy drives ... and a very rarely in PC used Intel 80186 processor. It*s running at phantastic 4.91 MHz... To be able to test current versions of DOOM8088 I have attached a ZIP drive as a slow motion harddisk replacement.

On a normal CGA 320x200 4 colors machine it would look like this:

This is how it looks like in CGA on the Olimarck LCD.

That is 40x25 text mode rendering. Is it faster than CGA? No...

And this one is 80x25 text mode.

Speed? Unplayable slow, slide show, maybe the CGA version is the fastest. And on that 80186 and probably NEC V20-40 we can use the faster 80286 version which does not use protected mode. I will later test NEC V30.

You can download the current releases here: https://github.com/FrenkelS/Doom8088
In the neighbour forum there is a threrad opened by Frenkel: https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/doo … 6-8088.1244511/

System requirements:
- 8088, 8086, 80186 and 80286, V20, V30, V40 processor
- TXT mode, MDA, CGA, EGA, VGA
- about 3 MB each graphics version
- at least ~450 kB of free MS-DOS memory
- optionally it even supports XMS memory

Currently I let run that laptop the -timedemo demo3 benchmark and publish the results of the three modes in the vcfed forum.

Have fun beeing DOOMed!
