Hi All,

I was looking at using something like the Kingston Cx486SLC + 87SLC 25MHz 286 to 486 CPU upgrade card.

Does anyone know whether this card is compatible with the IBM 5162 (or 5170 at a push - I have both)? The main goal is really to be able to run DOS applications in a multi-tasking way, using either DesqView in 386 mode, or Windows 3.x in 386 Enhanced mode. More grunt is always better, so the 486 SLC seems like the better of the two and the 386 options seem to be around the same price on Ebay anyways.

When I say compatible, I mean in two ways, one in terms of physical dimensions, and two in terms of working with the motherboard. I have tweaked the 5162 motherboard quite a lot, for example, I'm using AMI BIOS instead of the original IBM BIOS, because the original IBM BIOS didn't let you upgrade the CPU clock speed.

Many thanks!

I've had pretty good luck upgrading 5170/5162 to to Cyrix 486SLC/DLC using cpu kits. There's a good chance it will work, but perhaps not at the full 25MHz, as it will depend on how the manufacturer carried out the clock multiplication. On the other hand, working cache will provide way more benefit than the higher clock due to the slow system memory.

The link above isn't going to be of much help, since that system is 8088 based, and the board in question is 80286 based.
