It's the best version of the 4200 series, which is a mid-range Pentium 1 design for Compaq...

All of the 4100 & 4200 series aren't on ebay except for a 4110... there used to be a few.

The 1500 & 1700 series (next gen similar model) range from $100-500 depending on condition, but there's many.

If it's in poor condition it's probably worth a little more due to rarity.

I would left it as is before needed parts sill show up one day. Power supply easy could be issue, if it does not provide enough amperes.

im using a bench power supply 18-20v 3amps. does not seem to draw more than 1.5amp

im wondering if there is an internal protection or may be a cpu heat issue

it turns off. and then i need to dc\ power and recon. before it works again.

In my past experience I never had laptop with cpu heat issue with subsequent shutdown/protection, maximum reboot.

Official requirements could be more than 3.5A. Try to turn on laptop without battery or HDD inserted and see if anything change.

does this laptop even have a battery? i dont see where it would be located? if so it may be best to remove it due to age.

my power supply has a read out. i can see the AMP draw while its running. does not go over 1.5amp - norm - 800mah

also the power cut off it random, first time it worked and booted ect. then it started to cut off sooner and sooner. now it wont even turn on for more than a few sec. it seems like some type of protection cut

so i just went for it and stripped it down and started testing part by part. bare it boots again.
it seems maybe 1 of the 2 ram sticks could be the cause or bios issue with the cmos battery losing settings.
but its powering up and not random cut offs again.

I have tons of the 4100 and 4200 series laptops, including the 4220T. The RAM message you may be seeing is probably because of the cmos battery being bad. Someone on ebay sell's new one's they make to replace this. Doesn't look the same, but it fits and works fine. https://www.ebay.com/itm/325182069271?_skw=co … ABk9SR-K_7qHQZQ

as for the issue with the floppy drive. That's a fun one. These used a compressed floppy drive that use's a tiny rubber belt. These belts are usually always bad and usually the problem. I can tell you if you dont have the exact sized belt, you'll get mixed results if drive will be able to copy to or from a disk. I'v tried plenty of universal belt packs that had almost the proper size. I have one floppy drive i have labeled as such and it works 75% of the time. As for getting a real belt, you can either 3d print one yourself, which i found the files for it some time back, i'd have to research and find them again, but i'v never done any the 3d printing so i never tried. Then their was a guy on ebay out of Europe that was making them and seling them for this drive. That's the route i went to make a 100% functional floppy drive. The guy usually only makes a few at a time, so even if he sells out by the time you see this, he will eventually post more. Sometimes if you reach out to him and tell him you want to purchase 1 or a few, he will start making them again and get the ebay post back in stock. He keeps the same page, cause i just pulled up the one i purchased from my 2022 history and its still the same, shows 3 in stock as i write this.

Be very careful with the floppy drive belt, i can tell you its not fun, but its doable as long as your slow, dont mess with the heads, etc.
