Is there a piece of software for Windows 98 that allows me to redirect MIDI data to a serial port? Similar to how SBEMU and SoftMPU does it for DOS.

Roland has a serial MIDI driver:

Serial MIDI driver for Windows 95/98/ME.

Thanks! It actually works for Windows apps. DOS Games still have an issue when running from Windows. (No music at all comes out)

Have you tried VDMSound? There is a Windows 9x port of it, which might help with emulating MPU-401 MIDI interfaces in DOS sessions running under Windows.

I've read that VDMSound for 9x is unstable, is it still the case?

Could be. I've never tried it myself. I just suggested it because I thought it could be a potential solution.

The Vogons topic about the Win9x port of VDMSound, created over two decades ago, still sees the occasional response, I see. 🙂

what are you trying to accomplish exactly? there are roland and yamaha serial drivers for win9x as well as a java serial midi bridge and midi-ox. what is the workflow that you want?

i also use vdmsound under win9x to pipe midi data from dos sessions to the windows midi mapper. you can even convert back & forth between mt-32 and gm instrument maps. i have no idea how stable vdmsound is in general, but if you disable all sb, fm, joystick etc... modules and only run mpu-401 emulation it is rock stable under win9x.
