IMO the game is meant for you to have to sometimes choose between your weapon and your flashlight.

As someone who didn't like that mechanic, I agree with you.

I thought it was narratively unrealistic and found the constant switching tedious, but I still played through the entire game like that, since it was how the devs intended for the game to be experienced. I was fully aware of the duct tape mod during my playthrough, but opted not to use it for the aforementioned reasons.

Always disliked the shotgun in that game, and no weapon felt satisfying to use. The machinegun and the plasma rifle were ok, but nothing that gives the dopamine from killing a pinky or a whole group of zombies with a single super shotgun blast in Doom 2

Did any of you ever use the chainsaw much? I regarded it to be a novelty weapon mostly - outside of a couple of times where it was the obvious weapon to choose, I mostly ignored it. But maybe that was a mistake?

Doom 3, what's that? That sums it up for me. I'd rather play the hundreds of wads with broken Brutal Doom Platinum than play that slow, dark shit again. It didn't boost the atmosphere, it made the entire thing a claustrophobic mess where the main enemies were darkness, tiny crawling spaces and extremely slow and predictable enemy spawns. It was so far from the original Doom experience that it took them 12 years to get back on track.
The (S)shotgun wasn't THAT bad, they just had to cripple it a little to give other weapons a chance. BDP is the perfect example of an unbalanced auto shotgun that makes other weapons collect dust. Doom 3 made a compromise to force players to use different weapons in different situations but failed because of the terrible spawn system that encouraged players to overuse the (S)shotgun.
