On my AMD K6-400
Matrox G100
Voodoo1
Lucky Star 5MVP3 rev 2.1
Windows 98SE

My voodoo1 (A-Trend ATC-2465A4) only seems to work with driver 3.00.01. Any other driver is instant pc freeze when starting any 3dfx game or even starting up 3DMark99 for example.

Is the card broken or is the card extremely picky with the driver?

Or is there a specific driver for this card?

Not sure about the older drivers but the latest reference driver (3.01.00) tends to work properly only with Intel hardware. Running 3.00.01 on your AMD K6-2 is the right choice. There is nothing wrong with the card. I guess the statement can be: is the driver picky with my AMD or Cyrix CPU? 😉

Besides 'picky' cards; most 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics cards are (almost) the same with the exception of cards like Diamond, early Orchid or miroMedia (or any other non 4MB card). The 'regular' 3Dfx card like the A-Trend follows the reference design. A lot of brands actually sold A-Trend cards under a different name 😀. Differences can usually be found in the brand of RAM chips or the RAMDAC but I've never seen compatibility issues in that area.

Ah thank you, that explains a lot.

The reason i was trying a different driver was because of 3dmark99 which does not let me select double buffer and therefore all tests glitch out

I have similar experience with Voodoo drivers. Regarding 3DMark99 - I think you need the registered version, then you can select any settings you want.

Select double buffering on the primary card, and then select the V1.

Also with any older driver the card refuses to work. It still feels stange to me it only works with 1 specific driver.
