I forgot to say I am trying on windows 10 with a 3060ti. I have directx installed. It works on some people's Win 10 (RX550 and Vega) but not on my PC. I think it's because they have an AMD card while I have a nvidia. Is that possible? I responded to this thread without realizing what dgvoodoo was

in the dgVoodoo2 folder, in the x86 folder, put over all the files (this demo should use d3d9.dll) to the directory which holds the demo's exe.
Use the dgVoodooCpl program to configure the card in the DirectX tab to something "ATI" related.
It's an AMD/ATi demo so it works in AMD.
I downloaded dgvoodoo 2.85 (version 2.84.1 is not available). Then I placed all the files for the assassin demo (including the ShaderCache and Audio folders) inside dgVoodoo2_85\MS\x86 folder.
Then I launched dgVoodoo2_85\dgVoodooCpl.exe. The only thing I did was go to the DirectX tab in the dgvoodoo control panel and changed videocard to ATI Radeon 8500. Then I opened dgVoodoo2_85\dgVoodoo.conf file in notepad. In the [DirectX] section of that file, I changed VRAM to 512 instead of 256, saved and closed the file. Then I ran dgVoodoo2_85\MS\x86\SushiDX.exe.
It shows the loading progress bar but then quits abruptly in the middle. Here are contents of the error log file:
1//===================================================== 2// ATI Sushi Error Log Created 1/2/2026 5:09 pm 3//===================================================== 4[AwFn.cpp] (line 2892): D3DAw Error: AwTexImage2D - Unable to create texture object 5[SuTexture.cpp] (line 3196): ERROR: Unable to load texture: color 'S:/Demos/R500/Ruby3/Art/sourceimages/optico/FaceBodSkinCombine_color_2048.bmp' alpha 'S:/Demos/R500/Ruby3/Art/sourceimages/optico/FaceBodSkinCombine_AO_2048.BMP' 6[SuTexture.cpp] (line 3198): width: 2048 height: 2048 bitdepth: 32 compressed: 5 mipmapped: 1 7[SuTexture.cpp] (line 3202): bytesPerImage: 5592432 totalBytes: 5592432 8[SOLInternals.cpp] (line 489): ERROR: Unable to load texture! 9[SOLObjectManager.cpp] (line 546): ERROR: Unable to load static textures! 10[Main.cpp] (line 1098): Normal Application Exit
Any idea where I'm going wrong or something I've misunderstood?

The Radeon 8500 is a DX8 card but Assassin is a DX9 demo requiring some AMD-specific vertex format support IIRC.
So, you must use the default Virtual Card which incorporates all the capabilities of the others (with extras).

Thanks! But I've tried even the virtual card (both dgVoodoo Virtual SVGA Card and dgVoodoo Virtual 3D Accelerated Card) - in both cases I get that same error as shown in my last post. Do you still have your folder that contains the dgvoodoo stuff and the demo? Maybe the issue I'm facing is due to a version difference in dgVoodoo?

Nope, I use the latest version of dgVoodoo and it works.
It'll much more likely be something with your dgv configuration, like too little VRAM for too high resolution or sg like that. What log do you get with the _dbg version of dgVoodoo?

But I didn't change any other settings except what I mentioned in my post. I also tried with the latest version and the debug version - exact same error. The only thing I changed was the "Videocard" to "dgvoodoo Virtual 3d accelerated card" and VRAM to 1024 mb in the dgvoodoo control panel. That's why it's so confusing, I'm seeing the same error over and over again
I've attached an archive with the dgvoodoo conf file as well as the ATI demo settings file (sushi.ini) with this post. Also here's the link with the images that show dgvoodoo settings in each tab:

Okay, but if you have DebugView++ running in the background, what log is dumped by the _dbg version of dgvoodoo?
Thank you very much for that tip! I wasn't aware of DebugView++, and by looking at the logs I saw a message that indicated that dgvoodoo looks for the conf file in the x86 folder. I thought the conf file was supposed to be present along with the main dgvoodoo executable. Once I shifted the conf, the demo worked. Thanks again!
Hi xtreger, I read your message. I got it working with 512MB of video memory, as it was enough for the time. I think the demo isn't able to use the dgvoodoo configuration for some reason?
