I've always been fascinated by this game. It came out when i was 14, and was the one of the motivations to work every summer to buy new hardware. I remember finishing the game at about 15 fps with a 8600 GTS, at some point upgraded to a C2D E6750 and a HD 4850 and played the game in 1680x1050, high settings DX9 at about 35 fps or so and felt like i've made it in life.

I've installed the game again on the XP machine i've recently built and man does this game runs like garbage on what was a mid to high end system around 2009. I thought i would be able to enjoy the game smoothly in 1280x1024 in very high settings but nope, that gives me maybe about 35-40 fps with the 4870, about 15 more with the 5850.

Going through old threads from around 2007-2009 on the internet, i'm reading comments such as "Crysis is really playable with low fps". Were people just convincing themselves after spending a few Ks in a system that can't run the game or maybe i've been spoiled by years of playing everything at 60+ fps?

In the 2nd and 3rd level of the game, framerate collapses to about 30 fps regardless of the GPU in combat. Everyone was talking about GPUs back then but it seems extremely demanding for the CPU. I guess crappy framerates are part of the nostalgia vs a modern a rig!

I find this game to be unplayable below around 50 fps. Who else tried to run it and wondered how we accepted things likes 25-40 fps back in the day? And if you played the game recently, what were the game settings and hardware?

I slogged through the game when it was new at 20fps and lower speeds, a lot of people did from what I understand. On the other hand, most other game experiences I have had were not all that different... earlier time or a later one, but still not good enough hardware for what was current 🤣. I could play only (really)old games at proper smooth framerates on whatever hardware I have been having. Nowdays I have a i5 machine with a GTX970, I should try to see what he game is like on it... I'm sure it will be a dramatic improvement over an Athlon X2 64 4000+ with a 8600GT I was having around the last playthrough time...

Modern hardware with high frame rates in most games is definitely a factor I think. Moore's law isn't doing anywhere near as much now as it used to.

When it released I had a 2.4GHz Northwood Celeron with a Radeon 9600 Pro. I played it half-way through on the lowest settings 1024×768 with 11fps.

The second attempt was with a Athlon X2 5050e and HD4670 1GB. I don't remember the frame rate, but it did alright. The last boss kept crashing the game for me so I ended up still not finishing

The first time I beat it I had a Phenom II X6 1055T and a Radeon HD7850 2GB. I'd say with Crysis, I wouldn't go below this for 900p or maybe 1080p. My screen was 1680×1050. It was a good experience, playable from start to finish.

I recently tested Crysis on a Ivy Bridge 3.5 GHz platform and a GTX 480 (with DX9). It barely got 60 FPS at all high settings and 1080p.

I think you'll need something like this or better if you really want to have a smooth experience. I'd recommend a GTX 580 over the 480 though given the 480's power issues.

I don’t remember what resolution I was using or what FPS I was happy with at the time but I think the first system I owned were Crysis felt smooth was a Q6600 / GTx260+. That might have been 1024x768 30fps tho.

I've tested Crysis on my Ultimate Windows XP machine (i7-3770k / GTX 980) and it runs over 100 FPS at 1920x1200 (max detail settings for DX9).

I've also previously played it with a multi-monitor EyeFinity setup (5760x1080 resolution). I think that was either on an i7-4770k or an i7-8700k, probably using the same GTX 980. Don't recall the FPS, but I do remember it was smooth and completely playable on that setup.

If you want to run Crysis at a decent frame with high detail, you probably want a computer from at least the early 2010's.
