Hi guys,

Just got a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP running latest reference drivers in win 98. My issue is games are defaulting to 75hz for some reason on my crt. I want to select 85hz. Are there any modded drivers (or another method) to manually select refresh rate for each resolution?

Thanks!

this should work by default, but the monitor needs to be installed as a pnp monitor in order for the supported resolutions/refresh rates to be read out. if it's too old for that you need the floppy that the monitor came with, or have to enter the refresh rates in some .inf file yourself.

Hmm I have an inf file with all the refresh rates. But it still sticks to 75hz. Desktop mode i can have 85 etc. Just seems to be 3dfx games.

never had this issue in 98se with the final stock driver. all the refresh rates are there under the usual windows tab.

my only guess is some env variable in autoexec.bat (used for V1/V2 normally) or even registry setting is interfering here. i'd try from a fresh windows install or at least after a driver cleaner pro run.

The refresh rate for different bit depths and resolutions need to be set individually for every mode in Win9x. Additionally I seem to remember that the 3Dfx control panel specifies a separate refresh for Glide, so the games utilizing that may not even follow what you've set as the desktop refresh anyway.

No need for separate utilities, just go to the properties after setting each mode (640x480, 800x600, etc.) and set the refresh rate every time until you've covered all the modes you want to use.

I haven't been able to find a refresh rate option in the 3DFX control panel for glide.

I can select all refresh rates in the windows tab. When running Direct3D games I can pick whatever refresh rate and it works. It's just when running in Glide it always just runs at 75hz for games. Is it a limitation of 3DFX cards to only run at 75hz for glide?

Found a solution 😀

I downloaded V.Control - 3dfx hardware tweaker and it works!! But yeh something must be up with my drivers I'm guessing. If anyone knows of a driver that lets you select refresh rates for glide in control panel please let me know. Thank you all

You're probably just missing the 3DfxTools-package which is meant to complement the driver - but V.Control and many other third party tools like it were made to offer alternatives, so you should be all set.

1.07.00 beta indeed misses the 3dfx tools, while 1.07.00 final WHQL (which is earlier than the other one; weird naming) comes with it. i've always stuck with the latter and never needed another tool to switch refresh rates, and for directdraw games there is the override option in dxdiag.
