The first generation of ATi VLB Mach32 cards had a set of 8 buffer/driver chips between the Mach32 chip and the VLB connector:

But the later version just sort of left them out:

What's the downside of the card that doesn't have the F244 chips?

Ones with them are probably able to work better when there are 2 more VLB devices (stronger bus drive capability), but possibly not reach 50MHz or higher reliably due to delays from the buffers.

Ones without are less likely to be able to coexist with more VLB cards but are probably able to take 50MHz+ without an issue.

The VRAM based card I have does have the buffers and works ok at 50MHz with one more VLB card in the mix.

My ATI Graphics Ultra Pro VLB even does not like 40 MHz FSB.
