Hi there, first time poster.

Like many here, I'm looking for a Windows 98 rig to play older games - I don't want to use DOSBox. My requirements are a bit atypical as I've got two games in mind that don't come up here much:

Championship Manager 93 and its sequel Championship Manager 2.

The games are text-based management sims so graphics and sound aren't a priority, but a good number-crunching CPU is essential for fast load times. I'm not too fussed about period accuracy, as long it's quick and reasonably stable.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

PS: I'm UK based if that matters for sourcing parts etc.

The games you mentioned are DOS games not Windows. The later release supports SVGA. 93 asked for a 386, and 2 wanted a 486.

I haven't seen anything about there being an speed sensitivity issues. Any Pentium or faster machine should be fine.

Even though you don't want to use DOSBox. I suggest you set it up and try the game. You can set different tick rates to see if the games run into any problems. And even figure out what the lowest rate that feels quick enough for you is. From there it would be possible to spec out the minimum CPU performance level you want to target.

Given that

I'd just look for whatever is cheapest if you're dead set on a dedicated system, you're not going to need some exotic setup assuming you just throw in a soundblaster live/audigy and an older AGP card. Pentium 4s are plentiful and will have enough speed to handle later win9x games if you do want to use the machine for more than those two games.

Probably worth checking in dosbox that there aren't speed issues though before buying anything, if the games work with cycles set to max then the above suggestion should be fine.

I couldn't find much information on the games other than it mentioning there's a sound on/off setting. But that could be the PC speaker for all I know.

If it's really that basic of a game. XP's DOS support might even be able to run it without issue. And if it's not speed sensitive, any e-waste office PC that's been tossed would be fine.

I mean at that point you may as well just use DOSBox since it's just better than using XP's NTVDM + VDMSound, but I'm assuming they want bare metal.
