Multiplier 6x, FSB 100MHz, CPU at 2.1v on a AOpen AX59 Pro. Diamond Stealth 3D 4000 (Gx2) on the AGP and 2x Voodoo 2 in SLI.

For some reason Quake II freezes when trying to load. Quake 1, Quake 3 and 3DMark99 run perfectly, rock solid stable.

I’ve reinstalled Quake 2 and installed the 3d now patch plus the 1.49 glide patch. Anyone have any other ideas?

Just checking, is it stable when running the CPU at stock speeds?

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Pluto 700 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

Well I can’t run stock speed for the CPU, if I set the FSB to 95, the mobo runs at 90 for some reason, so that ends up being 540MHz.

Quake 2 freezes with the 570+ CPU @ 540, 550 and 600. I’ve also taken the voltage up to 2.3v.

Quake 2 runs fine with my 550+ CPU, x5.5 @ 100FSb.

Everything is running on the machine so we’ll @ 600MHz. It’s just Quake 2 bombing out. It makes no sense 🙁

I got a hint from this thread (Quake and Quake 2 won't run on a Super Socket 7 system?). Quake 2 can crash like this when there is an issue with drives. The shortcut to Quake 2 referenced F: (which only existed when I had my 550+ installed). I ran Quake 2 without the reference and it ran. However, I also removed a sdcard from the machine. So not exactly sure what fixed it. Will do some more testing tomorrow.

What’s strange is ….

The 570+ @ x6 and 100FSB gives me 85 fps in Quake 2 and 3504 in 3dMark99
The 550+ @ x5.5 and 100FSB gives me 95 fps in Quake 2 and 3401 in 3dMark99

So need to figure out what’s going in there. I shouldn’t complain though, according to Phil I should only getting 67.7 fps on a 550+ https://www.philscomputerlab.com/uploads/3/7/ … ing_project.pdf ?

FPS issue resolved. I was running hardware monitoring software in the background while running the Quake 2 timedemo. FPS is now 99.6. Very happy!

Glad you solved it!
What resolution are you using for 99.6 fps?

I’m using 800 x 600 with the V2 in SLI to get 99.6 fps.

My TNT2 Ultra can only do 72 fps (but that’s on a different motherboard).
