I have a vintage PC with a Voodoo Rush graphics card installed.
The PC only has an SD card to IDE adapter attached and no CDROM is connected.

I've installed pure DOS and copied over the Tomb Raider 1 folder.
I'm trying to get Tomb Raider working in glide mode.

I've searched the forum but I'm finding DOSBOX guides and various other discussions about Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 but I haven't been able to find the correct info for a Voodoo Rush.

The closest I got was to download Tomb3dfx.exe and Tombrush.exe from Phil's website and copy them to the game directory.
Renaming the first one to tomb.exe and running it asked for the CD and doing the same with Tombrush.exe just produced a list of errors.

Can anyone guide me through the steps please?

For what you are trying to do, you need a no-cd patch, but I'm not sure if it can be shared here (probably not, you can ask a moderator, maybe sharing delta patches is a better idea). Another option is to use tools like FakeCD/FakeDR/0CD, or SHSUCDHD from FreeDOS, to mount CD images from pure DOS.

Regarding the 3dfx patches, Tombrush.exe is dynamically linked to Glide, so you need the GLIDE2X.OVL corresponding to your card. Tomb3dfx.exe is statically linked, so it should work out of the box, as long as you solve the no-cd issue first.

In any case, you will be playing without music, as it is totally impossible to play CD-DA audio tracks from the hard disk on DOS.

It's fairly easy to burn a working copy using archive.org and PowerISO...

The OP mentioned he doesn't have a CD unit.

Oops! Sorry about that! Yeah, I also looked for a no-cd voodoo rush executable of tomb raider for quite some time with no success...

I have no-cd patches for all the 3d accelerated versions, and also the regular software version. I made them with help of the dosbox debugger after being unable to find them on the Internet.

I can share them, or delta patches to patch the original files, if a moderator confirms it is ok.

I would be grateful if you can share them please.
Are you able to share online? (Mega, Google Drive, Dropbox or something like that)
Perhaps you can pm me if you aren't allowed to post that publicly?

Thx

I’ve managed to get Tomb Raider working with my Voodoo Rush without needing the CD.
It’s running on my AMD 486DX4 100 and works well.

Thank you for the shared files @Davidmorom

Any suggestions for other glide games to try?

Glide games for DOS? There are a few, but a 486 is probably too underpowered to run most of them smoothly. Besides Tomb Raider, these are some of my favorites:

  • Carmaggedon
  • Screamer 2
  • Screamer Rally
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Dreams to Reality
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Pyl

In this thread you have a list, but I don't know if it is complete: DOS Glide Games List

Yes I'm specifically looking for DOS games that support glide.

I realize that my setup is a bit slow but I'm just messing around with the hardware and seeing what I can do with a 486 and my Voodoo Rush. (Yeah, I know, it's a slow card with a slow CPU that really isn't helping but so far the performance has been surprisingly good)
I've ordered an AMD 5x86 P75 which I hope I'll be able to overclock to 160, so I'm planning to push the limits of my setup to some degree 😀
If it performs well enough, the 5x86 will remain the home for my Voodoo Rush. If not, I have a Pentium 133 that will do the job.

Thanks, I'll try the games and will have a look at the other lists.
