This seems like relabeled OTP-ROM chip just like "912.8-1", "912.10-1", etc. with different versions of BIOS for this board.

If you want to flash some newer AMI or Award BIOS (or switchable dual AMI/Award BIOS function of this mobo), you can use 27-series EEPROMs . If you intend to use only AMI BIOSes, 29-series EEPROMs will work too. See this thread for details: BIOS chip for PCChips M912 (486 Socket 3)

Would the WB ("write back") mean it's programmed to lie that there is always 256KB cache?

I have no idea. My PCChips M912 ver. 1.4 mobo came with "912.8-1" OTP-ROM (128 kB dual AMI + Award BIOS chip), one TAG and eight cache real SRAM chips socketed out of the factory. I'm pretty sure that ".8-1" markings mean newer BIOS versions than in ".7-1" marked chips, and older than in ".10-1".

Thanks analog_programmer replaced it with a M27C512 and got the Award BIOS flashed on it as per your suggestion. Board shows proper amount of CACHE now.
