Been meaning to ask the same question since my recycler contact just got me an GA-5AA rev2.2.

Anything I should look out for in the meantime? I also have an Acorp 5ALI61 (aka Redfox ALI-AGP) in the meantime, if the same issue can be replicated there, as well as AGP Banshees and a V3 3000 (got a lot of Banshees 🤣)

Just updated the post Re: Voodoo 3 3000 AGP under performing?

I’ve come across another board. Jetway J-530BF https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/jetway-j-530bf

It’s a very late socket 7 board. Supports 100Mhz bus, voltage down to 1.8v, support for K6-2+/3+ and it supports SDR ram. It has the SiS 530 chipset so should not have the Voodoo performance bug. It’s PCI only, so perfect for my PCI Banshee. As a bonus it has an onboard Solo 1 😉

I've read it but still think I didn't quite understand it... the bug causes them to underperform in benchmarks?

Yes, for some reason particularly SS7 motherboards have terrible performance with Voodoo cards. All games and all benchmark apps. You don’t know you have a performance issue until you compare your results with other motherboards. I suspect it’s certain chipset revisions of MVP3 and ALADDiN V that is causing the issue.

Is it maybe missing 3DNow! or other AMD related driver optimizations for Banshee/Voodoo V3?

Can you find out what are the hardware or the software (BIOS) differences between GA-5AA rev. 1.1 and rev GA-5AA rev. 3.1 motherboards? Usually on the Gigabyte website there are different support pages for different revisions of the same model motherboard when there are significant differences between them, but there's only one support page for all the GA-5AA revisions.

Hmm... I recall trying both a V3 3k AGP and 2k PCI on my K6BV3+/66 recently and they were quite unusually slow, however I'm not sure whether it was due to using a non-plus K6-2 500 or the bug was the issue.

Not sure whether i440LX mainboards are affordable, but those might be an alternative to the SS7 route. A celly 533 is the fastest option for those, I remember getting a decent upgrade from moving up from a PII 233 to a PPGA slocket with a 533 Celeron and retaining the rock solid stability I was used to from my Asus P2L-97. Edit: I misread, it's a Banshee, but still an LX might be an alternative, if OP goes beyond the initial options.

Forget the 5x86 it’s too slow.

Also for Best performance install these
Win98se and Service pack 3 core updates
128 or 256mb of RAM
A Compact Flash card or SSD for Best Performance
