Hello

I have a super socket PCChips M577 motherboard. I want to patch the bios so I can use a AMD K6-2+ CPU. Before I flash my bios with a patch I want to flash my current bios to a new ROM using UNIFLASH. UNIFLASH says my current bios rom is a Winbond W29x010/011/012/5V series. I can only find this rom mentioned in UNIFLASH's documentation as being a rom that was tested and validated works with UNIFLASH. I also checked the internet archive for a reference. Any suggestions on an equivalent rom that might work as a substitute?

Thank you in advance for your help

Hello SDW,

Welcome to Vogons!

Your M577 BIOS flashchip is probably a Winbond W29C010 or W29EE011. They both have the same chip-ID so that’s why Uniflash can’t keep them apart.
These 128KB flashchips are 5V parts and don’t need 12V to be programmed. Other equivalent 128KB 5V DIP32 chips are the Atmel AT29C010A and SST29EE010A. These are the most common and probably supported by the M577 BIOS.

But I’m wondering why you want an extra flashchip to put the original BIOS in, and not just keep the backup copy of the BIOS on file in case you need to flash it back? And are you going to patch the M577 BIOS yourself or are you going to use the already patched and tested J.3 BIOS from TRW or latest J.4 BIOS from my Unofficial K6-2+/K6-III+ page?
Sorry, just curious. 😉

As I’m the guy who made these M577 patch J.x BIOSes, feel free to ask me question about these patches.

Greetings, Jan

Thank you for the reply. I was not having any luck at all with the J3 revision I found on theretroweb. My machine would keep getting weird hard drive write errors when using multiple compact flash cards and adapters. A real hard drive and SD card worked. I was going to hack away at a BIOS for the first time and wanted to make sure I did not brick my machine. I used bios patcher on the S revision and J3, but still had issues. I just found your other post where you helped B24Fox. Your J4 revision is magic. The other thread was not coming up in a google search.

Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge.
